PORTLAND, Oreg. - San Diego had tough competition at Portland on Saturday. The men won the doubles point but then couldn't keep up the momentum through singles play, losing 4-1. Portland improved to 14-1 and the Toreros fell to 10-8.
Filip Vittek and Joshua Page won in doubles against Mathieu Garcia and Mike Pervolarakis in a tie breaking match, 7-6 (7-3). Joel Gamerov and Gui Osorio also won their match against Portland's No. 2 team of Pierre Garcia and Felix Fan, 6-3.
"Portland played bigger, more aggressive tennis than we did, and it paid off in the end for them," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "I was very pleased with our doubles this afternoon as we are starting to hit our stride in each spot. We will get back outdoors and continue to build our toughness component that makes us a solid tennis squad."
In singles plays the Toreros weren't able to pick up any points against the Pilots. No. 114 Mike Pervolarakis defeated No. 70 Filip Vittek in a tie breaker 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). Mathieu Garcia defeated Gui Osorio at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 7-5. Pierre Garcia toppled Joshua Page on court three in a 6-2, 6-2 decision. Felix Fan clinched the victory for Portland when we defeated Alexandros Araouzos 6-3, 6-1.
"Let's call a spade a spade, we need more reps indoors to be a good indoor tennis team," said Coach Keckley. "We were on our heels in the singles play immediately. We didn't make the adjustments early enough to keep things even to begin each set. We battled back individually, but it was too little, too late."
San Diego won their match Thursday, March 30 against Gonzaga. With one win and one loss under their belt this week, the Toreros are 2-2 in WCC play.
