SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros ended their regular season with a defeat over Santa Clara on their home courts Sunday. The men won the doubles point then quickly clinched the win in singles play, earning a 4-0 shutout. The Toreros improved to 14-10 overall and 6-3 in conference. The Broncos fell to 14-7 overall and 4-5 in WCC.
"What a send off for our two seniors!" said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "It was a great atmosphere followed by a tremendous doubles point that was clinched by both seniors at the #1 doubles spot. We are really hitting our stride in this department."
The Toreros dominated on the courts against the Broncos. In doubles play, Joel Gamerov and Gui Osorio took the first point on court two. They defeated Jesus Barajas and Robert Seby, 6-4. The senior duo on court one clinched the doubles point for the Toreros. Filip Vittek and Josh Page won their nineteenth match of the season against Vasileios Iliopoulos and Connor Garnett, 7-5.
In singles play the Toreros continued their win streak and took points on courts two, four and five. Joel Gamerov defeated Vasileios Iliopoulos at the No. 5 position 6-4, 7-5. On court two, Gui Osorio toppled Santa Clara's Robert Seby in a 6-4, 6-4 decision. Senior Josh Page won his second match of the day and clinched the doubles point for the Toreros on court four. He won in a three set match against Jesus Barajas with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
"It was a highly contested match that could have gone either way," said Coach Keckley. "We started well and won five out of the six first sets. Santa Clara is well coached though and never stopped fighting. They made a real push at a comeback about half way through the singles portion of the match. I was proud of the way we handled their fight."
Sunday marked the last regular season match for the Toreros. It was also senior day at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center where Josh Page and Filip Vittek were recognized for their accomplishments and impact on the team.
"We raised our level when Santa Clara brought their best," said Coach Keckley. "I am particularly proud of Josh Page who cliched the match on senior day. We have come along way from January in each spot, and I am excited to see what the WCC tournament will bring for this group of motivated men."
San Diego will compete next week in the WCC Championships.
