Late Goal Downs Toreros

Aug. 27, 2017

SAN DIEGO - Amber Michel made five saves but a late goal by Texas Tech was the difference as the Toreros fell, 1-0, on Sunday night at Torero Stadium.

The Red Raiders (3-1) pressed forward throughout the match and generated 20 shots. USD (0-3) stifled Texas Tech's attack throughout a majority of the match, highlighted by a couple spectacular stops by Michel and her defense.

USD could not stop the Red Raiders in the 86th minute, when Gwennie Puente made a run down the right side of the penalty box. Puente slipped a pass between defenders to an on-running Kirsten Davis.

Davis took a touch then slotted a shot between Michel's legs and into the back of the net to give Texas Tech a 1-0 lead.

The Toreros nearly tied the game in the 89th minute when Mina Ghazizadeh sent a dangerous cross into the box that had to be cleared off the goal line by a Red Raiders defender.

That would be the final opportunity for USD, however, which could not find the equalizer.

Despite the defeat, Michel and her defense had another strong showing. Among her five stops, Michel's best save came in the 37th minute when a Texas Tech midfielder tried a chip shot from 35 yards out. Michel immediately drop-stepped, jumped and tipped the shot over the crossbar with her fingertips.

Michel got plenty of help from her defense, which blocked six of Texas Tech's 20 shots. Courtney Coate provided the defensive highlight of the game in the 10th minute when a turnover in the defensive zone led to a one-on-one between Michel and a Red Raiders striker.

The Texas Tech striker got past Michel and put a shot on frame, however, Coate rushed back to the goal line and was able to stop the shot and clear it away from goal to keep the score, 0-0.

USD picked up the pace offensively against Texas Tech, registering a season-high seven shots.

Summer Mason had a terrific game and was dangerous in the final third. She produced a team-best four shots and served multiple dangerous crosses into the penalty box.

San Diego will look to bounce back next Friday at 7 p.m. (PT) when it travels to San Diego State. The Toreros return home Sunday at 1:30 p.m. to play host to Denver.
