SAN DIEGO - Kelley Carusa returned to the lineup and scored the first goal of the season for San Diego but it was not enough as the Toreros dropped a 3-1 decision at San Diego State on Friday night.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 30th minute, Carusa responded just 17 seconds later to level the score at 1-1. It was the first goal of the season for USD (0-4) and the second of Carusa's career.
The Toreros have made progress offensively in each game this season and again were more dangerous in the final third against the Aztecs (2-3). USD held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks and of its five shots, three were on goal.
Maggie Ghotbi led the offensive charge with a team-high two shots. Summer Mason continued to be a threat up top and contributed an assist on Carusa's goal.
Amber Michel played well in goal for the Toreros, making four saves on 10 shots.
USD faced a deficit early in the second half after SDSU's, Esther Arnarsdottier, finished an opportunity from 15 yards out to give the Aztecs a 2-1 lead.
The Toreros pressed forward toward the end of the game and generated three corner kicks in a three-minute span from the 79th to the 83rd minutes but could not find the back of the net.
SDSU capitalized on the extra space and made the score 3-1 less than a minute and a half after the Toreros final corner kick in that sequence.
USD will look to bounce back Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (PT) when it plays host to Denver.
