PROVO, Utah - Olin Carter III led San Diego with 14 points but it was not enough to take down BYU as the Toreros fell, 74-58, Saturday night at the Marriott Center.
The Toreros (13-7, 4-4 WCC) battled through foul trouble throughout the game but shot well to remain within striking distance of the Cougars (17-4, 6-2 WCC). USD shot 41.2 percent from the field and went 7 for 19 from 3-point range (36.8 percent).
After trailing for a majority of the first half, the Toreros went on a 12-2 run to open the second and take a 38-37 lead. USD stuck with the Cougars throughout the half but were ultimately undone by a late BYU run that included six consecutive made field goals.
Along with Carter's 14 points, Isaiah Wright (13) and Isaiah Pineiro (12) reached double digits. Carter led the Toreros with seven rebounds and Pineiro dished out a team-high five assists.
"Olin's a guy who works hard, so the shots will fall," said head coach Lamont Smith. "His teammates did a good job of finding him and putting him in a good spot to be successful tonight."
The Toreros struggled with turnovers, committing 16 to BYU's six. The Cougars capitalized and turned the extra possessions into 21 points. TJ Haws led the Cougars with 24 points, while Jahshire Hardnett added 17.
"We have to address the turnover issue," said Smith. "We've got to really take focus on it in practice and make sure we're not turning the ball over. If we don't turn the ball over, we give ourselves a chance."
USD got off to a quality start, hitting its first shot of the game and holding BYU to 1-for-8 shooting from the field. The Cougars eventually found their rhythm and went on an 11-3 run over a 3:46 minute span to take a 15-9 lead with 11:28 to play in the half.
The Toreros dealt with foul trouble early, being called for five in the first 10 minutes and 11 in the first half. USD kept the Cougars within striking distance behind its 3-point shooting, going 4 for 10 in the first half.
Trailing 19-12, Olin Carter III hit three straight shots - one 3-pointer, one mid-range jumper and a difficult layup through traffic in the lane - to knot the score at 19-19.
BYU outscored the Toreros 16-7 over the final 6:56 to take a 35-26 lead into halftime.
The Toreros opened the second half on a 7-0 run to cut its deficit to 35-33. USD extended that run to 12-2 and a layup by Yauhan Massalski with 14:50 to play gave the Toreros a 38-37 lead - its first lead since they led 2-0 to start the game.
However, BYU hit six straight shots late in the second half to take a 66-54 lead with 3:26 to play and the Toreros were unable to cut into the deficit.
USD will look to bounce back next Thursday at 7 p.m. PT when it plays host to Santa Clara.
