SAN DIEGO -
Amber Michel recorded nine saves but it was not enough to stop BYU from securing the win in overtime, 2-1, Saturday night in Torero Stadium.
USD (4-7-1, 0-3) took an early lead and kept the Cougars (8-3-1, 3-0) off the scoreboard for a majority of the match.
Summer Mason scored in the 30th minute with a breakaway from the center line. She dribbled the ball all the way down the field and shot a screamer from 10 yards to score. It was Mason's fourth goal of the season. The Toreros ended at the half up, 1-0.
BYU's offense ignited at the start of the second half, with a goal in the 59th minute. Rachel Lyman sent a cross to Elise Flake, who popped the ball up for Madie Gates to finish to the right side out of reach for Michel.
The Toreros came close to scoring again in the 67
th minute, passing several times to set up
Milan Moses with a header, but it just went over the crossbar.
The Toreros and the Cougars each generated opportunities the rest of the second period but no one could find the back of the net to end the match in 90 minutes.
The Cougars tried to end the match three minutes into overtime with a shot to the post, but Michel made a great stop to keep the Toreros alive.
However, BYU ended up getting past USD's defense in the 98th minute. The Cougar's Flake battled past several defenders to secure a clear shot from the top of the box to the left post, out of reach for Michel.
Michel recorded a total of nine saves facing 23 shots. The back line- consisting mainly of
Devyn Kelsey,
Kelley Carusa,
Emma Barrow, and
Mina Ghazizadeh – also played well to block shots and stop shot opportunities for the Cougars.
The Toreros will look to bounce back when they travel to Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. (PT).
