Comeback Falls Short Against Dons

San Diego fell to San Francisco, 2-1, to open WCC play

SAN FRANCISCO – San Diego's comeback fell short in a 2-1 loss to San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.

The Dons (3-7-1, 1-0 WCC) scored goals in the sixth and 58th minutes to go up 2-0. The Toreros (4-6-2, 0-1 WCC) answered on a Miguel Berry penalty kick in the 60th minute but came up just short in the end.

San Diego came out aggressive to start the contest with Reuben Dass and Ulber Perez both recording shots in the first three minutes. But it was San Francisco who struck first in the sixth minute, when Dons forward Ashish Chattha sent a deflected ball past Matt Wiher into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The Toreros remained on the attack in the first half, outshooting the Dons, 8-5. USD's best chance of the half came in the 33rd minute when Freddy Polzer took a cross from the left side of the field and headed it just wide of the goal.

In the 48th minute, Miguel Berry went sprinting down the field and sent a strong shot straight that deflected off USF goal keeper Ruben Stuiver. Dass was there to head the rebound towards the goal but it landed right in the hands of the Dons goal keeper.

The Dons scored their second goal in the 57th minute when they sent a cross from the right corner of the field in to Noah Leong. His header found an open corner on the left side of the goal and proved to be the game-winner for USF.

A few minutes later, San Diego was awarded a penalty kick in the 60th minute. Miguel Berry's shot sailed past a diving Stuiver, into the top right corner of the goal for Berry's third goal of the season.

San Diego did not let up outshooting the Dons 10-5 in the second half and 18-10 in the contest. However, all 10 of USF's shots were on goal. The Dons held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 7-4.

Matt Wiher had an active day in goal for the Toreros, recording eight saves on the day.

The Toreros remain on the road for a pair of WCC matchups next week. On Friday, they will take on Gonzaga at 7 p.m., before traveling west to face No. 11 Portland on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
