SAN DIEGO – San Diego outlasted Hawaii to claim a 58-50 victory in their home opener on Sunday afternoon.
The Toreros (1-1) led the Rainbow Wahine (0-3) for a majority of the contest, shooting 38 percent from the field (17-45) and going 21-for-28 from the line. USD held a 38-24 rebound advantage, with 13 offensive boards.
Patricia Brossmann paced the Toreros, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds (five offensive) and three assists. Brossmann also had a stellar day defensively, leading the team with four steals and one block.
Freshman guard
Kiera Oakry made an immediate impact in her home debut, tallying 11 points and going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Oakry also chipped in with seven rebounds to lead the Toreros.
San Diego held a 52-47 lead with 3:14 remaining in the fourth quarter before Hawaii's Tia Kanoa knocked down back-to-back three-point jumpers to pull the 'Bows within two.
The Toreros then closed with a 6-0 run in the final two minutes—Oakry sank a jumper and USD was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line—to secure their first win of the season.
Sydney Shepard led the team with four assists, while
Sydney Hunter added nine points.
Kendall Bird also pitched in with eight points before leaving with a leg injury near the end of the third quarter.
The Toreros will travel to Minnesota next Saturday to take on the Gophers at 5:30 p.m. PT.
