Toreros Take Down Aztecs in Thriller

San Diego defeats crosstown rival SDSU, 72-71

SAN DIEGO— Sydney Hunter scored a career-high 16 points to lead San Diego to a 72-71 victory over crosstown rival San Diego State on Wednesday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (3-3) trailed by four with 22 seconds remaining before Sydney Shepard drained a timely three-pointer and Myah Pace delivered two free throws to take down the Aztecs (4-3) in thrilling fashion.

In addition to Hunter, Pace (14), Shepard (12) and Patricia Brossmann (10) each put up double-digit points in a game that saw 16 ties and 12 lead changes. Madison Pollock had a team-high nine rebounds and Pace led the team with 8 assists and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line—including the game winner.

SDSU got off to a hot start, taking a 16-8 lead before Myah Pace hit back-to-back three-pointers and Ana Ramos finished with a three of her own to pull the Toreros within one, 18-17, to end the first period.

Both teams cooled off in the second quarter and the Toreros went into halftime, trailing by two, 31-29.

The Aztecs led for the majority of the second half, with San Diego taking its first lead of the fourth quarter on Pace's final free-throw with four seconds to play.

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday when they host Dartmouth at 2 p.m. in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
