Strong Second Half Powers Season-Opening Victory

Scholl earns first career win as a head coach

SAN DIEGO – San Diego outscored Weber State by 24 points in the second half and Sam Scholl earned his first victory as a head coach as the Toreros defeated the Wildcats, 83-66, Tuesday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (1-0) roared back from an early first-half deficit to defeat Weber State (0-1). Isaiah Pineiro led the charge with a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds. He also put in work on the defensive end with a team-high four steals.

It was a tale of two halves for the Toreros, which shot 33.3 percent in the first half but exploded in the second stanza, going 21-of-32 (65.6 percent). USD came alive from behind the arc in the second half, going 7-of-10 from three-point range compared to a 0-for-7 mark in the first half.

Yauhen Massalski was two points shy of having a double-double of his own, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Olin Carter III and Isaiah Wright registered 13 points apiece, while Alex Floresca added 12 points. Joey Calcaterra was excellent in his collegiate debut off the bench, knocking down three-of-five shots for seven points.

While the Toreros finished the night with impressive offensive numbers, it was their defense that kept them in the game early. USD held Weber State to 44.3 percent shooting from the field and 29 percent from three-point range, and only sent the Wildcats to the free-throw line for eight attempts.

The Toreros started the game 1-of-10 from the field and committed eight of their 11 turnovers in the first half. However, USD was able to keep the Wildcats within striking distance by forcing tough shots on the defensive end and being tough on the boards. The Toreros outrebounded Weber State, 24-19, in the first half and, 42-31, on the night.

The Toreros found their offensive rhythm in the second portion of the half but went into halftime trailing, 32-25.

The second half belonged to USD. Massalski got the Toreros going with a quality finish on the first possession of the second half. His basket sparked a 9-2 run that was capped by a three-pointer by Carter III and leveled the score at, 34-34.

Calcaterra scored his first collegiate points on the Toreros next possession to give USD its first lead of the season, 34-32.

The Toreros continued to grind on the defensive end and caught fire offensively midway through the second half, going on an 11-4 run over a 2:54 span to take its biggest lead of the night with 12:28 remaining, 51-41.

A jumper by Calcaterra with 9:32 to play put the Toreros up by 10. USD would hold a double-digit lead the remainder of the game. Williams provided the exclamation point on the night with a three pointer with 1:12 to play that put USD up by 18 points.

USD will look to continue its momentum Friday when it makes its first road trip of the season to UC Davis at 7 p.m. PT.
