Toreros Travel to Oregon

SAN DIEGO – San Diego will pursue its best start in program history when it travels to Oregon on Wednesday at 7 p.m. PT.
 
The Toreros (8-2) have won six of their past seven games and matched their best start in program history at 8-2 with an 82-68 victory against CSUN this past Sunday. USD has never opened a season 9-2 or better since becoming a Division-I program in 1979-80.
 
The Ducks (5-3) snapped a two-game losing skid with an 84-61 victory against Nebraska Omaha this past Saturday.
 
The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with Rich Burk (play-by-play) and Steve Lavin (analyst) on the call. Jack Cronin will have the call on ESPN 1700AM. Live statistics will be available via USDToreros.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• Alex Floresca scored a career-high 16 points and all five San Diego starters reached double-digits in scoring as the Toreros earned a convincing 82-68 victory against CSUN this past Sunday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
• USD matched its best start in program history as a Division-I program at 8-2 and improved to 6-0 at home this season with the win.
 
•  Floresca was efficient throughout the game, finishing 7-of-9 from the field, including 1-of-1 from 3-point range, and added four assists, three rebounds and a block in 23 minutes of action.
 
• The Toreros shot 53 percent on the day and knocked down 11 3-pointers in a balanced offensive effort. USD shared the ball well, dishing out 25 assists on 32 made baskets.
 
• Isaiah Pineiro matched Floresca with 16 points, followed by Isaiah Wright (15), Olin Carter III (13) and Tyler Williams (12). Williams did all of his damage from behind the arc and was 4-of-6, one shy of his single-game career high for made 3-pointers.
 
•  Pineiro led the Toreros with seven rebounds, followed by Carter III, Wright and Akim Jamal-Jonah with four apiece.
 
• Wright contributed a team-high seven assists – one shy of his season high – and swiped two steals.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. OREGON
• USD is 1-0 all-time Ducks, winning the only meeting 64-57 on Dec. 13, 2008, at the Pape Jam in the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon.
 
•  Gyno Pomare had 16 points and 8 rebounds to lead San Diego to a 64-57 victory over Oregon at the Rose Garden Arena on Saturday. Chris Lewis had 15 points and Rob Jones added 14 and six rebounds for the Toreros
 
FAMILIAR FACES » OREGON
• USD has two players from Oregon on its roster – Mitch Schafer (Portland, Ore.) and Simon Stringer (Portland, Ore.). Schafer attended high school at Jesuit, while Stringer went to Cetnral Catholic and attended Clackamas Community College.
 
• Director of Operations, Lance LaVetter, served as an assistant coach for the University of Portland's women's basketball team from 1997 to 1999, helping the Pilots reach the 1999 WNIT.
 
HOT STARTS FOR PINEIRO AND CARTER III
• Isaiah Pineiro led the Toreros in scoring in six-of-10 games and Olin Carter III has led USD in three games.
 
•  Pineiro is averaging 20.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Pineiro is shooting 54 percent from the field and 34 percent from 3-point range.
 
• Carter III is averaging 16.4 points per game and is shooting 48 percent from the field. He has been one of USD's most dangerous shooter from behind the arc, connecting on 38 percent of his 3-point attempts. Carter III is also contributing 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
 
WRIGHT HEATING UP
• Wright started the season well but has excelled in the second half of the season so far. In the past five games, he his shooting 50 percent from the field, 39 percent from 3-point range, and averaging 17.2 points, 5.2 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.0 steals during those four contests.
 
• Wright is contributing 13.1 points, 4.9 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on the season.
 
NUMBERS UP FOR MASSALSKI
• Yauhen Massalski increased nearly every offensive and defensive numbers through the first six games this season. He was averaging 8.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and is shooting 70 percent from the field. (2017-18 » 4.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.3 bpg, 65 FG pct.)
 
•  Massalski was limited to three minutes of playing time in the Toreros seventh game of the season at Ole Miss due to injury. His status is currently "day-to-day."
 
BALANCED PLAY BY WILLIAMS
• Tyler Williams does a little of everything for the Toreros on both sides of the floor. He is averaging 8.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He holds a 5.1 assists to turnover ratio.
 
EFFICIENCY IS KEY FOR FLORESCA
• Through the first six games of the season, Alex Floresca was one of the Toreros most efficient players. He was averaging 6.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per game. He shot 71 percent (15-of-21) from the field and was 3-of-5 (60 percent) from behind the arc.
 
• His minutes have significantly increased with the injury to Massalski and has averaged 24.3 minutes in the past four games. On the season, Floresca is averaging 6.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in 19.3 minutes.
 
FINISHING STRONG
• USD has outscored opponents 427-345 during the second half this season. The Toreros are shooting 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range during second halves this season. They are holding opponents to 44 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc.
 
NARROW DEFEATS ON THE ROAD
• USD's two losses this year have been by a combined 10 points and both coming on the road. The Toreros dropped a 66-63 decision at Washington and fell 93-86 at Ole Miss.
 
PAC-12 SCHEDULE
• Oregon will be the third of four Pac-12 teams USD will take on in its nonconference schedule. The Toreros traveled to Washington on Nov. 12 (L, 66-63) and played host to Colorado on Nov. 20 (W, 70-64). USD travels to Oregon on Dec. 12 and will take on Washington State on Dec. 22 in Las Vegas, Nevada, as part of the Las Vegas Classic.
