Balanced Offense Sparks Victory

Five players reached double-digits in San Diego’s 83-79 victory over SJSU

SAN DIEGO—Sydney Hunter and Patricia Brossmann each recorded a double-double in an 83-79 victory over San Jose State on Friday evening inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
The Toreros (7-4) used a balanced attack to take down the Spartans (1-10), finishing the night with five players in double-digits—including Hunter and Brossmann as well as Madison Pollock, Leticia Soares and Sydney Shepard.
 
Hunter recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 15 points and 12 rebounds (six offensive), while Brossmann added 10 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Pollock paced the Toreros with team-highs in points (18) and assists (6). Soares finished with 13 points and Shepard added 10.
 
Myah Pace had a team-high three steals and tied for first on the team with six assists. She also added 11 of San Diego's 62 total rebounds. 
 
The Toreros started strong, pulling out to an early 15-7 lead in the first quarter before SJSU went on a 13-2 run late in the period to take its only lead of the contest. San Diego answered with a run of its own, scoring eight straight to start the second quarter and holding the Spartans to eight points in the period and taking a 41-30 lead into the locker room at the half.
 
San Diego built its largest lead of the game, 43-30, after Hunter sank a jumper 15 seconds into the second half. The Spartans responded quickly, hitting nine-straight to pull within four, 43-39, but the Toreros would not relinquish the lead. 
 
San Diego dominated off the glass, outrebounding the Spartans 62-24, including 36 offensive rebounds. SJSU scored 49 percent of its offense from three-point range, shooting 13-of-30 while the Toreros lived in the paint (40 points). Collectively, USD shot 69 percent from the free-throw line finishing 20-of-29.
 
The Toreros return to action next Saturday (Dec. 29) when they begin conference play at San Francisco at 2 p.m. PT, before traveling to Santa Clara on Monday at 2 p.m. PT.
