SAN DIEGO - Alexandros Araouzos came up clutch in a big moment for the second time this season for San Diego as the Toreros took down UC Santa Barbara, 4-3, Sunday afternoon.
With the Toreros (3-1) and Gauchos (3-2) tied at 3-3, Araouzos earned a comeback win in the five-spot against Hironori Koyanagi, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, to claim the team victory. It's the second time this season Araouzos has provided the clinching decision in comeback fashion after doing so two weeks ago at No. 10 TCU.
"Alex came up big for us again today," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "He fought some adversity early in the match after having two set points on his racquet in the first set. He recollected himself emotionally and came up with the goods when we needed him most."
The Toreros team of Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren took the first doubles match, 6-1, while UCSB took the second, 6-2. Gui Osorio and Nico Borter claimed the doubles point for USD by taking the final match, 6-3.
"We knew the doubles point was going to be huge in this match," said Keckley. "Joel and August came out firing and really handled their pressure well. Nico and Gui competed extremely well and competed the point for us in aggressive fashion. I am extremely proud of where our doubles has come from this fall. We still have a lot of work to do in this area, but this is a big step forward for this group."
The Toreros started quickly in singles play, earning their next two points with Holmgren beating out No. 75 Nicolas Moreno, 6-3, 6-3, and Osorio taking home a, 6-4, 6-2, victory against Simon Freund. It was Holmgren's first collegiate victory against a top-75 opponent.
The Gauchos won the next three matches to tie the score, 3-3. Borter was defeated, 6-4, 6-4. Gamerov held the second set to a close one, but was ultimately brought down with a score of, 6-2, 7-6 (5). After winning the first set and keeping the second set close, David Norfeldt dropped his singles decision to Joseph Rotherman, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The match came down to the final set between Araouzos and Koyanagi. Araouzos delivered a dominating performance in the final set to seal the victory for the Toreros.
