SAN DIEGO - Four San Diego players scored in double-digits, led by Isaiah Pineiro's 20 points, as the Toreros earned a convincing victory against BYU, 75-62, Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Along with Pineiro, Cameron Neubauer (14), Olin Carter III (13) and Isaiah Wright (11) also scored in double-figures for USD (17-11, 8-8 WCC), which shot 50 percent from the field on the day. The Toreros did damage from three-point range, connecting on nine of 21 attempts.
The Cougars (21-8, 10-6 WCC) were led offensively by Elijah Bryant and TJ Haws with 14 points apiece.
USD held BYU to 37 percent shooting from the field and a 3-for-22 clip from behind the arc.
Cameron Neubauer sank a three-pointer on the first shot of the game and the Toreros never looked back. The Cougars took a brief lead on a jumper by Childs with 15:16 to play in the first half but a layup by Alex Floresca less than two minutes later gave USD a lead it would not relinquish.
The Toreros extended its lead to 22-12 midway through the first half and held a 13-point lead when Pineiro connected from behind the arc with 1:50 to play.
The Toreros attacked early and often and benefitted by getting the Cougars in foul trouble early.
USD shot 57.1 percent in the first half, including 50 percent (7-for-14) from three-point range and held the Cougars to 30.8 percent shooting from the field. BYU was limited to 1-for-13 shooting from three-point range.
Toreros picked up where they left off at the beginning of the second half. Isaiah Wright scored five points on a layup and three-pointer in the first minute of the half to give the Toreros its biggest lead of the game, 44-28.
USD weathered a 7-0 run by the Cougars midway through the half, however, and had its lead cut to, 46-41. The Toreros resonded with an, 8-3, run to stretch its lead back out to 10 points with 9:29 to play in regulation.
The Toreros had its lead cut to five a second time, 61-56, with 4:25 to play but USD outscored the Cougars 14-6 to close the game and seal the victory.
USD concludes its regular season home schedule Thursday at 6 p.m. PT against Gonzaga.
