SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego started strong in doubles play but it was not enough against Arizona State as the Toreros fell, 4-3, Saturday afternoon.
It was the third time in five matches this season that USD (3-2) played in a match decided by a score of 4-3. The Toreros pulled out those victories against No. 10 TCU and UC Santa Barbara but came up just short against the Sun Devils (4-3).
"It was a great college tennis match today," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We competed extremely well as a team, we just missed out on some big opportunities when they presented themselves."
Gui Osorio and Nico Borter, who played at the No. 1 position, lead the Toreros with the first win of the day. The pair defeated ASU's Michael Geerts and Makey Rakotomalala, 6-3.
Alexandros Araouzos and Pratt Keerasuntonpong secured the doubles point with their win over Thomas Wright and Andrea Bolla, 6-3. They played at the No. 3 spot.
"I thought we looked sharp in doubles," said Coach Keckley. "We have put a great amount of focus in this area of our game and have seen the results early. It was nice to see Pratt and Alex come away with a win at the three-spot."
In singles play freshman August Holmgren defeated No. 90 Rakotomalala at the No. 2 position 6-3, 6-2. Nico Borter, who played on court four, also won his match. He defeated Balla with a tie breaker in set two 6-2, 7-6 (5).
"Congrats to August as well for earning his second straight top 100 win in less than a week," said Keckley. "He is coming on extremely strong for this unit, and it has been encouraging to watch his growth throughout this year."
With the match tied at 3-3, it was Osorio and No. 70 Geerts on court one that ultimately decited the match. Geerts defeated Osorio 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.
"We put ourselves in a position to be successful and at the end of the day that is all you can ask for," said Keckley. "We just need to continue to learn to be brave in the moments that determine the overall outcome of the match. That will come with more matches like this throughout the course of the season."
The Toreros play host to Fresno State Sunday at 2 p.m. PT.
