Third Sets Deciding Factor in Toreros Victory

Feb. 18, 2018

Final Stats

SAN DIEGO - San Diego put away Fresno State on Sunday afternoon, 4-3, with all of the Toreros points coming from singles wins.

"Another incredible match today from both sides," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "Fresno State is a gritty team, and they were in control of the majority of the match. The boys showed some heart and fought their way back in singles after being down early on most courts. We talk a lot about overcoming adversity, and this afternoon proved we are listening and most importantly, taking action."

USD split the first two matches in doubles play with Fresno State, and ultimately dropped the third one, which gave Fresno State an early 1-0 lead.

August Holmgren secured the Toreros' first point of the day, winning his singles match, 6-2, 6-1. The Bulldogs quickly answered with a singles win over David Norfeldt, 6-2, 6-2.

Toreros tied up the score at 2-2 with Joel Gamerov's close win, 6-4, 7-6(3).

The final three matches went to the third set, making for a thrilling end to the match.

Gui Osorio dominated his opponent 6-1 in the final set to give USD their third point of the day. Immediately after, Nico Borter secured the Toreros' victory, beating his opponent, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2.

"Congrats to Nico Borter for clinching," said Keckley. "He has put in a lot of time this semester understanding what makes him such a powerful tennis player. He has really hit his stride these past two weeks."

The final pair played out their match, with a Fresno State win, making the final match score, 4-3.

USD hosts cross-town rival, San Diego State at 2 p.m. PT next Sunday.

"We are learning a lot about ourselves as a team with each match played," said Keckley. "Today, we needed to show a greater sense of urgency when we stepped out on to that court. We did a poor job with this concept and put ourselves in a difficult position. We will be a better team because of this experience and will continue to put in the time to prepare for SDSU this Friday."
