SAN DIEGO - Alexandros Araouzos had two match point opportunities but was unable to finish off San Diego State's Ignacio Martinez and San Diego fell, 4-3, to the Aztecs Friday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
With the match tied, 3-3, Araouzos trailed Martinez, 4-3, in the third set. Araouzos won the next two games to take a 5-4 lead. However, Martinez was able to fend off an aggressive Araouzos, who held leads in ensuing games, and won the next two games to secure a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, victory and claim the day's deciding point.
The Toreros (4-3) fell behind early in the match dropping the doubles point, giving the Aztecs (2-7) a 1-0 lead. David Norfeldt and Garrett Kurtz fell to Arnaud Restifo and Joel Popov, 6-3, while August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov fell to Rafael Gonzalez Almazan and Santiago Cevallos, 6-4.
The deficit doubled when Cevallos defeated Gui Osorio, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 2 singles spot to give SDSU a 2-0 advantage. The Aztecs went up 3-0 when Gonzalez Almazan defeated Norfeldt, 6-4, 6-3.
The Toreros rallied to take the next three matches. Gamerov made quick work of Popov, 6-4, 6-3, while Nico Borter took down Sander Andersen, 6-1, 2-6, 6-0. Holmgren leveled the match at 3-3, picking up a 6-4, 7-5, result against Restifo.
The match came down to Araouzos and Martinez. Araouzos had come up clutch in similar positions multiple times earlier this season but could not produce the result Friday as the Aztecs claimed the victory.
USD will look to rebound next Thursday when it takes on USC in La Jolla, California.
