Toreros Open Season with 19 Personal Bests

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - San Diego opened their spring season with 19 personal bests at the OXY Distance Carnival.

It was a rainy afternoon for the Toreros as they competed in their first track meet of the spring season Saturday.

The races for the Toreros began with the 1,500 meter. The women kicked it off in section five when freshmen Sera Parvin showed her speed as she sprinted in for a 2nd place finish. Teammates Cammy Manes, Erin Duncan and Kate Koehler followed with 4th, 5th, and 6th place finishes.

The next race for USD was section four, the men's 1500m. Senior Logan Owens finished with his best 1500m time of the season and a 5th place finish, 4:08.07.

The 5km was the primary event for San Diego. Hannah Rasmussen earned the fastest opening starting time for a freshman female at USD. She won 18th place with a time of 17:22.49. '

Sophomore Cassidy Kuhn followed and brought home a personal best of 17:37.49. She placed 27th. Senior Julie Giannini followed to place 35th with a time of 18:18.42.

Junior Zani Moore posted an impressive time and personal best in the event. She finished in 5th place with a time of 17:53.

Freshman Maggie Scholle finished 18th with a time 18:07.98, another personal best.

"Having Samantha Mattice and Natalie North-Cole in the line-up was a victory for us," said head coach Will Guarino. "Nursing injuries in this sport is so critical to the growth of our program and having them show the courage to climb back up the racing ladder is so encouraging for us."

In section three of the women's 5km, RS freshman Madison Lambros laid it out in the second half of the race to finish with a time of 18:26.74. She was followed by outstanding finishes from seniors Haley Shipway and Allison Mattias, and sophomores Brianna Pertak and Haley Purtzer.

The women's races came to a close, and the men geared up to compete.

"Knowing that I had to run in lane two to avoid the water puddles was something that all runners had to face tonight," said senior Max Pedrotti. "I was determined to have a strong opener."

Pedrotti pushed the lead in his 5km until the last lap of the race. He finished in second place and posted a time of 14:55.56, a strong opening time for the first meet of the season.

In the second heat, sophomore Patrick Bruce battled to came up from behind to win in a near photo finish. He earned a personal best with a time of 15:18.09.

Bruce was also followed by a 4th place fishish from freshman teammate Jackson Pearce, 15:24.68. Team captain Liam Burke ended with an 8th place finish and time of 15:29.42.

By pushing the pace for nearly half the race, junior Eli-Rosen Duran finished with a personal best time of 15:44.18 and a 6th place finish.

Freshmen Ryan Tessier got his feet wet as he was introduced to the track with a 31st place finish and a time of 16:34.08.

Section six was to be the last of the men's 5km heats. Matthew Sick delivered his best race since competing with USD. He finished in 5th place with a personal best of 16:25.02. He was followed by Om Kanwar, who placed 16th, and Jack McCarthy who placed 22nd with a time of 16:47.00.

Up next, the Toreros train over the next week as they prepare for the Aztec Invitational on Friday, March 23, 2018. Rain or shine the Toreros are looking forward to their upcoming local kick off to spring break competition.
