SAN DIEGO - Joel Gamerov won his third straight match to lead San Diego to a dominating 4-0 victory against Portland on Sunday afternoon.

For the second day in a row, Gamerov made quick work of his opponent and was the first player to win his singles match. Playing at No. 3, he defeated the Pilots' (6-7, 1-2 WCC) Pierre Garcia, 6-2, 6-2. Gamerov has won six consecutive sets and improved to 7-4 when playing in the third position.

"This was a statement match for this team," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We wanted to play physical tennis on our terms from start to finish. We were successful at doing that today at home in front of a great crowd."

The Toreros (8-7, 2-0 WCC) got off to a great start in doubles play. August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov earned a convincing 6-1 victory at No. 1 against the Pilots' Mike Pervolarakis and Alex Wallace. The duo improved to 9-4 in dual-match competition.

After Portland won at the No. 3 spot, Nico Borter and Pratt Keerasuntonpong sealed the point for USD with a 6-4 win in the second position.

The Toreros carried the momentum into singles play and doubled its lead to 2-0 quickly with Gamerov's victory.

"Joel has come on really strong for this team in recent matches," said Keckley. "He has a new-found purpose which is one of the reasons why things are really starting to click for him. I couldn't be happier for the way he is growing as a tennis player and as a leader of this team."

Alex Araouzos won his match at No. 5 shortly after, 6-2, 6-1, to put the Toreros up, 3-0. He has won three straight matches and is 6-3 when playing in the five spot this season.

For the second day in a row, Nico Borter provided the match-clinching victory at the No. 2 position, defeating Mathieu Garcia, 6-4, 6-4. He improved to 10-5 in dual match play this season.

The remaining matches were halted after Borter clinched the winning point for the Toreros.

USD will look to continue its momentum next Saturday at 2 p.m. PT when it continues WCC play against BYU.
