La Jolla, Calif. -- San Diego's distance program turned in a strong performance at the California Collegiate Open on Saturday. Hannah Rasmussen raced to a victory in the 1500m, while Sera Parvin and Kate Kohler did the same in their respective heats of the 800m.
Head coach, Will Guarino, was impressed with how his young team performed. Comments Guarino, "It was great to see the underclassmen be so hungry to posts great places and times."
Freshman Rasmussen was the sole Torero to compete in the second heat for the 800m women's race, where she posted a time of 2:17.48, earning her second place.
In the third 800m heat, Toreros Parvin (2:20.88) and Cassidy Kuhn (2:22.34) took first and second, respectively. Parvin's time was her personal best. Cammy Manes (2:25.65) followed closely behind, placing fourth.
Five USD women competed in the fourth heat of the 800m race. Kohler (2:20.67), Zani Moore (2:22.21) and Jessica Ong (2:22.43) took the first three finishes. Kohler and Moore both posted their personal best times in this race.
Women also competed in the 1500m race as a team of six in the first heat. Rasmussen posted another impressive performance, placing first with her best time of 4:37.12.
Guarino was with the freshman impressed, saying, "Hannah raced very well today and took control. Despite being challenged at the 900-meter mark, she decided to pull away as she kicked in the 1500m."
Toreros exemplified teamwork in the 5k race, with Madison Lambros (17:46.84) and Julie Giannini (17:53.37) working together to successful races.
Says Guarino, "It was great to see Madison help pull teammate Julie to a strong 5km performance. Madison ran a personal best to place fourth, and helped pull Julie under 18 minutes in the 5km."
All three male Toreros who competed in the 800m race placed in the top five. In heat one, Logan Owens placed fifth with a time of 2:03.39.
In the second heat, Jackson Pearce (2:02.52) and Patrick Bruce (2:03.07) took first and second place, respectively. This was a personal best for Bruce, and he did not stop there.
Pearce and Bruce also found success in their 1500m race. Bruce ran another personal best time of 4:05.87, placing second. Pearce followed close behind with a time of 4:07.95, and placed third.
Guarino commented on Bruce's success, "Patrick showed true athleticism and determination by posting two personal bests and two second place performances."
The men's 5k race was led by senior Max Pedrotti, who placed fifth with a time of 15:10.01.
The team will now have an off week as it prepares to return to Triton Stadium for the Triton Invitational on Saturday, April 14th.
