Maddie Marotta and
Milan Moses both scored in the second half to secure San Diego (1-1-1) a 2-0 win over Sam Houston State (1-0-2) on Friday night at Prickett Field, giving the Toreros their first win of the season.
After a slow start to the match, the Toreros offense dominated the second half.
Marotta scored the Torero's first goal of the season in the 47th minute. She kicked it to the back of the net from the box off a cross from Moses on the left side.
Moses scored the second goal of the night with just four minutes left in the match. She dribbled past a defender and shot to the top right corner to score a goal, just five yards out.
Summer Mason helped with the assist.
Moses has the best-shot percentage on the team (.083), with 10 of her 12 shots this season on target.
The best attempt by the Sam Houston State to get on the scoreboard came in the 20th minute, when the Kats' forced a penalty kick. SHSU's Meredith Carlson took the shot but
Amber Michel made a diving save to keep the Kats' off the scoreboard. Michel recorded six saves in the match.
The Kats' outshot the Toreros 8-5 in the first half, but USD's offense exploded in the second half recording 11 shots over SHSU's four.
By the end of the match USD held advantages against SHSU in shots, 16-12, and shots on goal, 8-5. The offense was a truly a team effort with the
Summer Mason, Julianne de Armas,
Mina Ghazizadeh and
Halle Walls all recording shots.
USD plays No. 9 Texas A&M on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. (PT) at College Station.
