SAN DIEGO – The Seattle University offense proved to be too much for San Diego, which fell to the Redhawks, 4-0, on Wednesday night at Torero Stadium.
The Toreros (3-4-2) did their best to control possession but were unable to breach the Seattle U (5-3) back line in the final third. USD was limited to just 3 shots in the match, to SU's 19. The Redhawks held a 12-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Seattle U was quick to get on the board, scoring its first goal in the 9th minute of the contest. Redhawk freshman Declan McGlynn sailed a shot just past a diving
Connor Hountalas, who got the start in goal, to give SU the early lead.
The Torero defense did well to hold off a relentless Redhawk attack that saw 9 shots in the first half, but Seattle U scored again late in the first period to take a 2-0 lead at the half.
In the 56th minute, Hountalas leapt up to make a spectacular save, but Redhawks midfielder Hamish Ritchie was there for the deflection and found the back of the net for SU's third score.
The final goal of the night came in the 83rd minute when Houtalas blocked a first attempt by the Redhawks offense before they picked up the deflection and tucked the ball into the corner of the net. Hountalas finished the night with a career-best eight saves.
San Diego will look to bounce back as it heads on the road to take on CSUN on Sunday at 6 p.m.
