Toreros Victorious in Northridge

San Diego edged CSUN on the road, 1-0

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – San Diego scored in the 82nd minute to secure a 1-0 victory over CSUN on Sunday night at Matador Stadium.

The Toreros (4-4-2) were outshot by the Matadors 17-6, but USD's defense played well to shutout CSUN (6-4) and give the Torero offense a chance. Miguel Berry scored late in the second period, when he threaded a pass from Reuben Dass through three defenders, off the left post and in.

The Matadors came out aggressive, outshooting the Toreros 9-2 in the first 45 minutes. But San Diego defense did well to keep CSUN clear of the box and out of the net.

As time dwindled down, the Torero offense began to attack. In the 82nd minute, Dass sent a long pass left to right across the field where Berry was waiting at the top of the penalty box to send it in and put the Toreros on the board. It was Berry's second goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Matt Wiher recorded a career-high eight saves for USD, including two in the last 10 minutes of the match to secure the victory for the Toreros.

CSUN's best chance came in the 78th minute when Matadors forward Nicholas Grinde charged inside the box and kicked a shot that glanced off the left foot of Wiher and struck the right post. Jimmy Ryan was able to clear the rebound and keep CSUN scoreless.

The Matadors held advantages in shots (17-6) and corner kicks (5-3), but the Torero defense held the advantage in saves (9-1).

The Toreros return home to Torero Stadium on Friday to finish up nonconference play against UC Riverside at 7 p.m.
