SAN DIEGO –
Milan Moses ended the Pilots 347 minute shutout streak, but San Diego fell short to Portland, 4-1, on Thursday night in Torero Stadium.
The Pilots (8-5) got an early lead with a header in the first two minutes of the match off a corner kick.
However,
Amber Michel made two saves in the first half to keep the Toreros (4-5-1) in striking distance.
USD rallied at the start of the second half, outshooting the Pilots 4-0 in the first ten minutes.
Milan Moses tied up the match with a penalty kick to the center, inches below the cross bar in the 63rd minute. With the goal, Moses ended Portland's three-game and 347-minute shutout streak. Moses now has 10 goals this season, two of which came from penalty kicks.
The Pilots responded immediately scoring a goal three minutes later. Portland's Natalie Muth passed to Taryn Por Ries who shot to the center goal over a diving Michel to score.
Portland extended its lead after
Kelley Carusa was given a red card in the 67th minute. Por Ries scored with a penalty kick to the right side, out of reach for Michel.
With the Toreros down one player the rest of the match, Por Ries got another opportunity for a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. She shot to the right side again to put Portland up 4-1.
USD out shot Portland in the second half 9-6, but could not find the back of the net. The Toreros also held advantages in corner kicks, 6-4.
The Toreros will look to bounce back in their match against Gonzaga on Sunday at 1 p.m. (PT) in Torero Stadium.
