Double Overtime Goal Downs Toreros

San Diego falls to Gonzaga 3-2 in double overtime

Sept. 30, 2018

SAN DIEGO – San Diego's offense rallied each time Gonzaga scored a goal, but the Zags' goal in double overtime put them on top, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Torero Stadium.

Gonzaga (6-3-2, 1-1 WCC) scored the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute with a free kick. Jodi Ulkekul's free kick rebounded off a player into the right side, out of reach for the goalkeeper Amber Michel who dived to stop the ball.

The Toreros (4-6-1, 0-2 WCC) were down 1-0 at the start of the second half, until Milan Moses scored in the 59th minute to tie up the match. Moses battled several defenders before she shot to the near post from the top of the box to score. She leads the team with nine goals this season.

Gonzaga responded with another goal in the 76th minute. Callie Best sent in a cross to McKenna Ferrera who finished it off to score.

However, USD kept on battling to tie up the match. Moses almost scored with a shot at the post in the 80th minute, but Katie Lapomarda ended up finishing off Moses' rebound to score and to tie up the match 2-2. Lapomarda now has two goals for the season.

Neither team could get another goal before the clock ran out in the second half.

Gonzaga almost scored at the end of the first overtime, but Michel made a diving save to the right side to take the teams into double overtime.

The Zags' ended up finishing the long, hard battle in the 103rd minute. Alaysia Lane passed to Ulkekul who shot to the right side from the goalie box to score her second goal of the match.

The Toreros will look to bounce back when they take on BYU ( 7-3-1, 2-0 WCC) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. (PT) in Torero Stadium.
