SAN DIEGO – San Diego earned its first victory of the season and
Brian Quinn notched his first win as a head coach as the Toreros defeated California Baptist, 2-1, Monday night at Torero Stadium.
Â
Miguel Berry scored the deciding goal in the 71st minute when he took control of a loose ball near the top of the penalty box and tucked a right-footed shot into the lower right corner of the goal. It is the first goal of the season for Berry who led the Toreros (1-2-1) a year ago with five.
"I'm hoping that's the first of many goals for him this season," said Quinn. "He's always available in the attacking areas and works his socks off defensively and with what we ask him to do without the ball. His all-around game was good tonight."
The victory is the first as a head coach for Quinn, who spent 11 years as an assistant before taking the reins this season.
"I'm happy for the team more than I am for myself," said Quinn. "We played well and got the goals at the right times, and deserved to win."
Â
Freddy Polzer scored the only goal of the first half to give the Toreros its first lead of the season.
Josiah Benjamin sent in a high cross from the right sideline. Berry flicked it along to the left side of the box with a header. Polzer was waiting at the back post and finished the opportunity with a shot to the right corner of the goal. Â
The Toreros outshot the Lancers (2-2), 15-10, and were in control for a majority of the match. However, Cal Baptist applied pressure late and were rewarded in the 84th minute when Preston Judd forced a turnover deep in the Toreros end and found the back of the net to cut the Toreros lead to 2-1.
Â
Despite the late goal by the Lancers, the Toreros defense played well and forced a majority of the pressure out wide.
Matt Wiher made two saves in goal for USD.
Â
The Toreros will look to build on its momentum Thursday at 5 p.m. PT when they travel to Lipscomb.
