NASHVILLE – San Diego had multiple opportunities but was unable capitalize in a, 1-1, draw on Saturday morning at Belmont.
After a slow start, the Toreros applied plenty of pressure in the second half, outshooting the Bruins, 18-1.
Ross Meldrum scored the equalizer in the 55th minute but USD did not find the back of the net again.Â
Belmont (0-3-1) struck first in the 9th minute, when Nigel Leo sent a rebound off
Matt Wiher high off the crossbar and in. The Bruins held a, 5-3, shot advantage at halftime but the Toreros (2-2-2) came out aggressive in the second half.
While USD generated multiple quality scoring opportunities, many just missed the mark. Early in the second half,
Miguel Berry headed a corner kick that ricocheted off the top of the crossbar and out of play.Â
In the 48th minute, Belmont's Esteban Lestido was issued a red card after a physical foul on
Ulber Perez and the Bruins were forced to play the remaining 62 minutes a man down.Â
The Toreros only goal came in the 55th minute when
Gustav Ericsson sent one in to
Ross Meldrum. Meldrum's shot was blocked but the referee determined that the ball had already crossed the goal line. This was the first career goal for Meldrum and the first career assist for Ericsson.
San Diego held the advantage in almost every statistical category. The Toreros outshot the Bruins 28-10 and had an astounding 21-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite controlling possession for a majority of the contest, and near unrelenting pressure in the second half, the Toreros could not secure the game winner. Belmont lead USD in saves 8-3.
The Toreros will return home to Torero Stadium next Thursday when they take on Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. PT.
