Toreros Host Pepperdine Saturday Afternoon

San Diego has won three of the past four meetings against the Waves

SAN DIEGO – San Diego will look to remain unbeaten at home this season when it plays host to Pepperdine on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
 
The Toreros (12-5, 1-1 WCC) are 9-0 at home and return to action after defeating Pacific last Saturday, 73-64. Pepperdine will be looking to bounce back after dropping each of their past two contests by a combined six points, falling against San Francisco, 72-69, and at Santa Clara, 67-64.
 
The game will be broadcast on Spectrum SportsNet with Dan Hellie (play-by-play) and Casey Jacobsen (analyst) on the call. Jack Cronin will have the radio broadcast on Mighty 1090AM. Live statistics will be available via USDToreros.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
- Isaiah Pineiro and Yauhen Massalski filled up the stat sheet and propelled San Diego to a 73-64 victory against Pacific on Saturday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
- Pineiro registered his third straight double-double with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds.
 
- Massalski swatted a career-high seven blocks and was one rebound shy of what would have been his second straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
 
- An early second-half surge fueled USD's victory as a four-point lead swelled to a 20-point advantage in the first eight minutes of the half. After Pacific scored the first basket of the second half, the Toreros went on a 16-0 run to lead 47-27 with 13:41 to play.
 
- The Toreros were excellent defensively, holding Pacific to 38 percent shooting on the night, including a 29 percent clip from 3-point range. USD registered 10 blocks, one shy of the school record for a single game.
 
- Along with Pineiro's team-high 24 points, Olin Carter III added 15 and all eight Toreros players who appeared in the game made at least one basket.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. PEPPERDINE
- USD is 45-62 all-time against Pepperdine but has won three of the past four meetings, including both contests last season.
 
- Jose Martinez scored 16 points off the bench to spark a Toreros victory in the last meeting, 68-66, on Feb. 8, 2018. USD closed the game on a 22-10 run and tied the program record for 3-pointers in a game with 15.
 
PINEIRO AND CARTER III LEAD THE WAY
- Isaiah Pineiro led the Toreros in scoring in nine-of-17 games and Olin Carter III has led USD in six games.
 
- Pineiro is averaging 20.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 2.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Pineiro is shooting 52 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range.
 
- Pineiro has registered double-doubles in each of the past three games. He is averaging 17.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per game during that span.
 
- Carter III is averaging 16.8 points per game and is shooting 46 percent from the field. He has been one of USD's most dangerous shooter from behind the arc, connecting on 35 percent of his 3-point attempts. Carter III is also contributing 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
 
WRIGHT HEATING UP
- Wright started the season well but began gaining steam toward the end of 2018. During a nine-game stretch from Nov.24-Dec. 23, he was shooting 46 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range, and averaging 15.4 points, 5.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals.
 
- Wright was contributing 13.2 points, 5.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game on the season.
 
- Wright sustained a wrist injury during the Toreros game against Drake (Dec. 23) and is expected to be out for a couple of weeks.
 
NUMBERS UP FOR MASSALSKI
- Yauhen Massalski increased nearly every offensive and defensive numbers through the first six games this season. He was averaging 8.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and is shooting 70 percent from the field. (2017-18 » 4.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.3 bpg, 65 FG pct.)
 
- Massalski was limited to three minutes of playing time in the Toreros seventh game of the season at Ole Miss due to injury. He returned to action Dec. 12 at Oregon when he came off the bench and played 16 minutes.
 
- Massalski is coming off his strongest game since the injury, posting 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven blocks against Pacific (Jan. 5).
 
BALANCED PLAY BY WILLIAMS
- Tyler Williams does a little of everything for the Toreros on both sides of the floor. He is averaging 9.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He holds a 2.7 assists to turnover ratio.
 
EFFICIENCY IS KEY FOR FLORESCA
- Through the first six games of the season, Alex Floresca was one of the Toreros most efficient players. He was averaging 6.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per game. He shot 71 percent (15-of-21) from the field and was 3-of-5 (60 percent) from behind the arc.
 
- His minutes significantly increased with the injury to Massalski and has averaged 26.0 minutes in the past 11 games. On the season, Floresca is averaging 6.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game in 22.5 minutes.
 
FINISHING STRONG
- USD has outscored opponents 693-609 during the second half this season. The Toreros are shooting 51 percent from the field and 43 percent from 3-point range during second halves this season. They are holding opponents to 45 percent from the field and 34 percent from behind the arc.
 
- In the final five minutes of games, USD is shooting 50 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range. They are holding opponents to 42 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3-point range. Isaiah Wright is shooting 68 percent overall down the stretch and 57 percent from behind the arc, while Isaiah Pineiro is connecting at 61 percent from the field and 50 percent from long distance.
 
TOREROS AMONG WCC LEADERS
- Isaiah Pineiro (4th, 20.1) and Olin Carter (9th, 16.8) are among the top-10 in scoring among all WCC players this season. USD, Gonzaga and BYU are the only teams with two players ranked among the top-10 in scoring.

SHARING THE BALL
- USD has recorded 277 assists on 466 made baskets this season (59 percent). Isaiah Wright leads the team with 65 assists, followed by Tyler Williams (59), Isaiah Pineiro (38) and Olin Carter III (36).
 
SENIORS LEAD THE WAY
- The Toreros are led by four returning senior starters, Isaiah Pineiro, Isaiah Wright, Olin Carter III and Tyler Williams.
 
- The quartet all rank among the top-10 in the WCC in minutes played. Wright leads the conference at 37.6 minutes, followed by Williams (2nd, 35.6), Carter III (4th, 35.0) and Pineiro (8th, 33.8).
 
EARLY ADDITION
- Marion Humphrey signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Toreros in November 2018. He enrolled at the university early and will begin classes in January of 2019. He is now practicing with the team and will redshirt the remainder of this season and be eligible to play at the beginning of the 2019-20 season.
