Toreros Comeback Falls Short

Turnovers prove costly as San Diego falls to Portland, 69-60

SAN DIEGO— Madison Pollock set a new season high, finishing with 22 points but San Diego could not complete the comeback against Portland, falling 60-69.

After trailing 27-14 in the first quarter, the Toreros made a second-half run, outscoring the Pilots (9-8, 1-5 WCC) 29-22, but USD's comeback came up just short Thursday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

In addition to Pollock, two other Toreros (8-10, 1-6 WCC) reached double-digit scoring. Sydney Shepard went 4-of-11 from three-point range and finished the day with 14 points, adding three assists and three steals.

Patricia Brossmann recorded her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Leticia Soares chipped in nine points and Sydney Hunter added eight rebounds.

Portland surged out of the gate, hitting 58 percent (11-of-19) from the field and 3-of-8 from three-point range to start the contest. Turnovers proved costly for the Toreros in the opening period, giving up the ball 12 times, resulting in 12 points for the Pilots.

Pollock and Shepard came alive for the Toreros in the second quarter, with Pollock a perfect 3-for-3 from the field while Shepard knocked down 2-of-3 from beyond the arc to keep pace with the Pilots. Portland took a 47-31 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Toreros were able to minimize the turnovers in the second half but the deficit proved too much for USD to overcome.

San Diego's best opportunity came with 1:32 remaining in the contest. Shepard knocked down a three-pointer to make it a two-possession game, 63-57. However, Portland held under the pressure, hitting 6-of-6 free-throws down the stretch to ice the game.

The Pilots finished 6-of-26 from beyond the arc, compared to San Diego's 4-of-13. Portland held a large advantage in points off of turnovers 23-14 while the Toreros dominated the boards 44-28 including 16 offensive rebounds.

The Toreros remain home to face off with No. 13 Gonzaga on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.
