SAN DIEGO— San Diego saw strong performances from two of its freshmen,
Aminata Dosso and
Kiera Oakry, in an 86-61 loss to No. 13 Gonzaga.

The Toreros (8-11, 1-7 WCC) had three players reach double-digit scoring and held the Bulldogs (17-2, 6-1 WCC) to 37 percent from the field in the second quarter, but ultimately could not keep pace with Gonzaga's high-powered offense.
Dosso had a breakout performance for the Toreros, finishing with a season-high 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting, adding three assists and a block. Oakry also recorded a season-high 11 points, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, and led the team with seven assists.

Patricia Brossmann added 12 points, a block, a steal and tied with
Leticia Soares for a team-high seven rebounds. Soares also chipped in eight points for USD.
After the Toreros took a quick 4-0 lead with baskets from Soares and Brossmann, Gonzaga went on a 18-0 scoring run sparked by three 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the contest. San Diego's scoring drought ended with 3:42 remaining in the first period on a Brossmann layup but the Toreros trailed 24-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Dosso began the second quarter with three consecutive baskets for the Toreros to spark a 10-2 run for USD. San Diego cut the Bulldogs' lead to four with 2:34 remaining on a jumper by
Sydney Hunter to make it 31-27, but the Zags answered with a run of their own. Gonzaga took a 41-29 lead into the locker room at the half and never looked back.

The Toreros finished 25-of-56 (45 percent) from the field while the Bulldogs finished 35-of-63 (56 percent) and 8-of-16 from three-point range. Gonzaga held the edge in rebounding 35-29 and collected 13 second chance points to San Diego's six.Â

USD collected most of its points in the paint (34) and shot 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Toreros saw good contributions from their bench with 24 combined points from the freshmen Oakry and Dosso.Â

San Diego will remain home next week for its Saturday matchup with the WCC's first-place team, BYU, on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT in the JCP.
