Toreros Drop Tough Contest to Cougars

BYU tops San Diego, 65-56, in tough battle on Saturday afternoon

SAN DIEGO— San Diego battled BYU for all 40 minutes, but ultimately fell to the Cougars, 65-56 on Saturday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
In a game that saw four ties and eight lead changes, the Toreros (8-12, 1-8 WCC) held their own against the WCC's top team, limiting the Cougars (17-3, 9-0 WCC) to 36 percent from the field and 6-of-26 from three-point range.

Madison Pollock recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sydney Shepard tied Pollock with a team-high 12 points, including 4-of-11 from three-point range.
 
Patricia Brossmann and Leticia Soares added eight points apiece and Sydney Hunter chipped in seven points and two steals.
 
The teams traded the lead to start, with the game tied 9-9 halfway through the first period. BYU extended their lead to six, 18-12 before Pollock and Hunter knocked down back-to-back jumpers to bring San Diego within two with 45 seconds left in the first quarter. 
 
 San Diego outscored BYU 14-12 in the second quarter behind two 3-pointers from Shepard and two clutch free throws from Brossmann with 18 seconds remaining to pull within one point at the half, 31-30.
 
The Toreros opened the second half with back-to-back baskets from Hunter and Pollock to retake the lead, 34-33, for the first time since halfway through in the first quarter. However, the Cougars answered with a pair of baskets of their own and led 43-38 at the end of the third.
 
Shepard sank a clutch three to open the fourth and Aminata Dosso knocked down a jumper to tie the game 43-43, but USD could not pull in front. The Cougars stretched their lead to six before San Diego rallied to pull within one point, 55-54 with 2:36 remaining in the game. BYU hit a pair of threes and went 4-of-6 from the line in the last two minutes to secure the win.

The Cougars outscored the Toreros in the paint 30-16 and dominated second chance points 20-5. The Toreros finished the day 40 percent from the field and 5-of-13 from three-point range.
 
San Diego will head on the road next week to face Pepperdine on Thursday at 7 p.m. before taking on Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 2 p.m.
