Defensive Effort Undone in Second Half

The Toreros fall to No. 24 Santa Clara on the road

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After holding No. 24 Santa Clara (8-5-1, 2-0-1 WCC) scoreless in the first half, San Diego (5-6-1, 1-2 WCC) fell 6-0 on the road on Saturday afternoon.

The Toreros played a brilliant first 45, pressuring Santa Clara to create space in the backfield. Michaela Foster, Malia Walencewicz, and Kelley Carusa helped hold the Broncos at midfield for a majority of the first half.

San Diego's midfield played up high to hold possession and create opportunities on offense. Bekah Valdez, Halle Walls, and Natalie Copenhaver helped gain possession for the Toreros off of goal kicks, leading to multiple shot opportunities.

Milan Moses looked to breakthrough for the Toreros in the 16th minute with a shot off her left foot. Moses led the way on offense with two shots, one on goal on the afternoon.

The second 45 began with a quick goal by Santa Clara's Kelcie Hedge, who slid a shot past an advancing Amber Michel 28 seconds into the half. The first goal of the match gave way to five more as the Broncos capitalized on a shift in momentum, creating a 17-2 advantage on shots.

Michel recorded a season high nine saves on the afternoon.

San Diego will return to Torero Stadium to take on LMU on Friday at 7 p.m. (PT).
