SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Lifted by a 13-under in the first round, the San Diego golf team turned in its highest finish in more than four years after carding a 16-under (272-292-281) and placing third at the 2019 Bill Cullum Invitational hosted at the Wood Ranch Golf Club (Par 72, 6,944 yards).
Two shots back of second-place Grand Canyon, the Toreros' third-place finish was their best since February 2015 when they placed second at the Aztec Invitational.
Sophomore
Harrison Kingsley registered another top-10 finish after shooting seven-under 209 (67-71-71) for eighth in the individual standings. It was Kingsley's third consecutive top-10 placing.
Junior
Donald Kay shot a 68 in the final round to close out in a tie for 19th with a three-under 213 (70-75-68). He was tied with teammate and sophomore
Evan Kawai (69-74-70). Senior
Yash Majmudar, playing in his first tournament since the first of the season at the Washington Husky Invitational, shot a 72 in each of the final two rounds to complete his tournament with a three-over 219 (75-72-72).
"The team played very well in round one with a 13-under," said USD head
Chris Riley. "I'm proud of our five-man group this week, including (Majmudar's) consecutive rounds of even par. We still need to clean up our wedge game, but great things are ahead."
Freshman
Alrik Pan shot a three-under 69 in the first round but finished with a six-over 222 (69-76-77) to round out the five Toreros scoring in the tournament.
USD climbed one spot on the final day as it was fourth after the first two rounds. The third-place finish also gives the Toreros two top-four finishes in four tournaments this fall.
The Toreros close out their fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule with the Hoakalei Invitational in Eva Beach, Hawaii October 28-30.
