WCC Play Begins with Gonzaga

The Toreros will face the Bulldogs on the road

SAN DIEGO – San Diego (4-4-1) is set to begin conference play with a matchup against Gonzaga (7-3-0) in Spokane. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Toreros will look to bounce back against the Bulldogs, after falling 3-2 in double overtime in 2018. Katie Lapomarda connected off a rebound from Milan Moses for the equalizer in the 80th minute. The first overtime period ended scoreless, then in the 103rd minute senior Jodi Ulkekul scored the golden goal for the Zags.

San Diego owns the all-time series record against Gonzaga at 7-4-0. The Toreros have succeeded on the road versus the Bulldogs with a 4-1 record in Spokane. The longest winning streak in the series stretches three games from 2011 to 2013.

The Bulldogs are coming off of a break after finishing their nonconference slate with a loss to Baylor, 2-1, on September 22. Baylor outshot the Zags, 19-10, placing 11 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Isabel Jones recorded a career-high nine saves in the contest.

Gonzaga forced the match into overtime when forward Maggie Conners scored the equalizer in the 87th minute. Baylor's Raegan Padgett found the back of the net in the 97th minute for her first goal of the season.

Freshmen Erin Healy and Lauren Elwer lead the Zags with four goals apiece so far in 2019. Redshirt senior India Jencks has also been potent in the midfield with three goals and three assists. In goal, Isabel Jones has seen the most action recording over 700 minutes this season. Jones has 26 saves on the year and holds a 4-1 record.

LAST TIME OUT
San Diego wrapped up nonconference play with a road trip to Utah. Bekah Valdez had the lone goal for the Toreros in a double overtime draw against Utah Valley. Rain and lightning plagued the match in Orem forcing the game into a 30-minute delay with three minutes left in regulation. The match ended tied at one a piece as neither team was able to score in overtime.

The Toreros fell to PAC-12 opponent Utah in Salt Lake City for their final nonconference match of the 2019 season. The defense impressed as Michaela Foster, Kelley Carusa and Malia Walencewicz were solid in the backfield to hold the Utes to only two shots on goal in the second period. San Diego committed only four fouls in the contest, one shy of tying its season low.
