SAN DIEGO – No. 18 San Diego surrendered a pair of goals 14 minutes apart in the early portion of the second half as it lost 2-1 to Gonzaga on Saturday at Torero Stadium.
The Toreros (10-3-1, 1-2 WCC) dropped their second match in a row due to the Zags (3-8-1, 2-1 WCC) overcoming a barrage of USD shots in the first half and quickly answering the equalizer with their game-winning goal a minute later.
Theo O'Malley (53') and Demetrius Kigeya (67') scored the goals for Gonzaga as the Bulldogs had eight shots to the Toreros' four in the second half.
After O'Malley converted a transition opportunity into a goal with a shot 15 yards out,
Chase Van Wey scored the lone USD goal to tie it at 1-1 in the 66th minute. The redshirt junior fielded a header pass from
Ross Meldrum near the left side of the goal area and drilled a shot into the far upper corner to tally his first goal of the year.
The Bulldogs answered 90 seconds later when Kigeya forced a USD turnover in front of the Torero penalty area and eventually worked around goalkeeper
Matt Wiher before finishing with an easy tap-in shot for the eventual game-winner.
The Toreros controlled much of the first half, using nine shots – three on goal – to force pressure on Gonzaga. Van Wey ignited the onslaught of shots in the 24th minute as the Toreros went on to total six in an eight-minute span. A few of the attempts were narrow misses, including a
Miguel Berry attempt that went off the side of the post while the Gonzaga backline halted a
George West shot when the goalkeeper Johan Garibay was out of place.
The Toreros finished the game out-shooting Gonzaga, 13-10. Six of the 13 USD shots were on goal.
San Diego stays home for its next match when it takes on LMU on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
