No. 23 Toreros Lose Their Third Straight

USD unleashed 19 shots but fell 3-1 to LMU

SAN DIEGO – Despite a fury of shots in the second half, No. 23 San Diego lost 3-1 to LMU at Torero Stadium on Wednesday to drop its third match in a row.

The Toreros (10-4-1, 1-3 WCC), who unleased 13 of their 19 shots in the final 45 minutes, could not overcome early goals in both halves by LMU (9-4-3, 4-0 WCC) to snap their skid. The Lions scored a goal less than four minutes into the game and then just over five minutes into the second half to open up the decisive advantage.

Although USD had the game's lead in shots, LMU had 10 of its 15 shots in the first half, including seven on goal. The Lions found the back of the net at the 3:38 mark when a corner kick taken by Bastien Oberli yielded a goal by Gerardo Lopez. Lopez managed the ball inside the penalty area and took a close proximity shot to make it 1-0.

USD goalkeeper Matt Wiher staved off several more opportunities in the first half, making six saves, to keep the Toreros in the game at the break.

However, Oberli made it a two-goal LMU lead with a lob shot over Wiher on an odd-man advantage at the 50:01 mark.

Senior Miguel Berry, who had seven shots in the game, was left to answer the goal 12 minutes later when he scored in the 63rd minute. The Toreros were pressuring the Lions on the right side of the penalty area before drawing a foul to set up a penalty kick for Berry. The forward converted the opportunity by beating the LMU keeper Alfredo Cortez on the low left side for his 13th goal of the season.

The Toreros staged some narrow misses after Berry's goal, including two shots by Berry, but in the 79th minute, the Lions put it away with a goal by Duhaney Williams following a cross by Dylan Shockey.

San Diego travels for its next match as it will play at Pacific on Saturday at 7 p.m.
