PROVO, Utah - San Diego's defense led the way on Saturday night as the Toreros (6-8-1, 2-4 WCC) held No. 4 BYU (15-0-1, 5-0-1 WCC) to only three goals on the night. The Cougars took the contest 3-1.
Redshirt senior
Milan Moses connected on the first shot of the match to give San Diego a 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute. With Moses' goal, USD became only the third WCC opponent to score against the Cougars. BYU's offense responded quickly with goals in the 13th and 20th minute.
After the two quick goals by BYU,
Amber Michel shut down the Cougars to keep USD down by one at the half. The senior goalkeeper recorded seven saves in the first 45, punching multiple shots away from the net.
Michaela Foster was brilliant in the backfield, helping defend the box by clearing multiple attacks from BYU.
Malia Walencewicz,
Kelley Carusa, and
Mina Ghazizadeh played tight blocking shot attempts to allow for resets of possession.
San Diego tried to close the gap in the 67th with a shot by
Halle Walls, and again in the 73rd off a shot from Moses.
The Toreros had a great look in the 87th as Foster rocketed a free kick towards the middle of the box, barely missing Carusa who was there for the header.
USD's bench contributed valuable minutes with Ghazizadeh,
Kayla Ngai, and
Sydney Hopkins seeing over 50 minutes of action.
Up next, San Diego returns home to face Pepperdine on November 1 at 7 p.m. (PT). Six seniors will be honored at Friday's match.
