SAN DIEGO - The Toreros (6-9-1, 2-5 WCC) home winning streak came to an end Friday night as San Diego fell 1-0 to Pepperdine (9-6-2, 5-2 WCC) in overtime.
USD's seniors played an instrumental role on Senior Night as
Amber Michel,
Kelley Carusa,
Milan Moses,
Halle Walls, and
Emma Barrow contributed over 70 minutes of action each.
Moses led the way for San Diego's offense with three shots on the night. In the 8th minute, Moses looked to connect off a quick switch back but the shot was blocked by the Waves.
Pepperdine fought to control possession after the attack by Moses, recording double-digit shots in the remaining 37 minutes.
Michel held Pepperdine scoreless throughout the first half collecting in three saves. The San Diego native came through in the 37th minute as Pepperdine fired a shot from 10 yards out that nearly skipped in under the crossbar.
Carusa and
Michaela Foster helped patrol the backline taking away multiple Pepperdine attacks to assist in the defensive effort.
Walls,
Natalie Copenhaver, and
Sami Fairweather patrolled the midfield battling through 10 Pepperdine fouls on the night.
The second 45 was a test in net for USD as Michel recorded double-digit saves in the half. The senior came through with multiple diving stops throughout the second 45 to keep San Diego tied at zeros. Michel tied her season-high in saves with 12 on the night.
Moses looked to breakthrough in the 89th minute, as Pepperdine's goalkeeper came through with the save to bring the match into overtime.
In the 97th minute, the Waves were awarded a penalty kick opportunity and connected to end the match with a golden goal.
San Diego will finish out WCC play next week with a match against Pacific on Wednesday in Torero Stadium followed by a trip to Portland.
