VAN NUYS, Calif. - San Diego women's cross country placed fifth overall on Friday morning for their best finish at the West Coast Conference Championships in four years. The Toreros were picked to finish seventh in the WCC in the Preseason Poll.
"It's a good day to be a Torero," said head coach
Will Guarino. "The results speak for themselves. This group ran so well, and they showed tremendous grit."
Hannah Rasmussen led the Toreros out of the gate, pacing in the top 20 for a majority of the race. The junior made a move around the halfway mark to distance herself even farther from the middle of the pack. Rasmussen finished 12th overall with a time of 20:56.70, her fastest career time at WCCs and a new personal best.
Rasmussen's finish automatically qualifies her for All-WCC second team honors.
Molly Klein ran strong as San Diego's second runner, pacing with Rasmussen for the first quarter of the race. Klein held her own in the middle of a crowded field to finish 30th overall with a time of 21:51.97.
Longmont, Colo. native
Cammy Manes emerged in the Toreros three spot finishing three places behind Klein with a time of 21:57.32. Manes was instrumental in catapulting the Toreros for their overall team finish.
Madison Lambros and
Gianna Sbarbaro rounded out the top five finishers with times of 22:16.87 and 22:34.38.
"The times show that we have the ability to continue to grow and compete at a high level," said Guarino. "I'm proud of our efforts today."
