Churness Leads Toreros Past Broncos

San Diego scored three second-half goals including two from Churness

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—After facing an early 1-0 deficit, San Diego scored three second-half goals to rally past Santa Clara, 3-1, on Saturday night in Stevens Stadium.
 
The Toreros (12-5-1, 3-4 WCC) were led by Alex Churness who recorded back-to-back goals in the 54th and 62nd minutes to secure the regular-season finale for USD. Miguel Berry followed with his 17th goal of the season in the 87th minute. With the goal, Berry moved in to a tie for second-place in USD's record book for most goals scored in a single season.
 
It was the Broncos (8-7-2, 2-4-1 WCC) who struck first, scoring in 41st minute before USD poured it on in the second half.
 
Berry played all 90 minutes, registering an assist on Churness' second goal to finish with three points. Chase Van Wey was also credited with an assist, feeding the ball in to Churness for the equalizer.
 
Santa Clara outshot USD, 12-11, while the Toreros held the slight advantage in shots on goal, 6-5. The Broncos put the pressure on early, registering eight of their 12 shots in the first half.
 
Goalkeeper Matt Wiher registered four saves for San Diego, including three in the first half, compared to SCU keeper Henning Jolivet who collected three.
 
With the win, San Diego moved to 12-5-1 on the season, their best finish since 2012 (14-9-0). The Toreros who continue to receive votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll will now hope to receive one of 24 at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament.
