City Championship Set for the JCP

Toreros look for their first back-to-back wins against the Aztecs since 2000-01

SAN DIEGO For the 51st time, San Diego and San Diego State will meet in the City Championship with this year's meeting set for the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros enter the rivalry matchup having won two of their last three, including wins at home against Fresno State and on the road at Weber State. Redshirt sophomore Joey Calcaterra has been hot offensively for the Toreros, averaging 17.3 points over the last three games.

The matchup for USD against SDSU will be its fourth game in nine days.

LAST TIME OUT: USD SUFFERS LATE RUN AGAINST IN LOSS AT #25 COLORADO
- After trailing by only four halfway through the second half, San Diego saw an 18-0 run by #25 Colorado help the Buffs pull away as the Toreros lost, 71-53, on the road last Saturday. The defeat snapped San Diego's brief two-game winning streak this season as well as a two-game winning streak against Colorado. The Buffs shot 50% from the field in the second while they finished the game draining 45.8% of their shots from beyond the arc. USD, meanwhile, led four different times in the first half, including by as much as four with five minutes left. Joey Calcaterra and Noel Coleman each had 10 points to lead the Toreros in scoring, but the team shot 34.5% from the field. 

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SDSU
- Wednesday will be the 51st meeting between USD and SDSU, with the Toreros trailing in the series, 19-31.

- San Diego won last year's meeting at SDSU and is looking for its first back-to-back wins against the Aztecs since 2000-01. It won four straight against SDSU from 1998 to 2001.

- The Toreros have lost five consecutive games at home in the series, with their last win occurring on November 30, 2005 (W, 90-80).

- Since 2015-16, the Toreros and Aztecs have split the series 2-2.

LOOKING AHEAD
- The Toreros return to Seattle for the second year in a row as they will face #25 Washington on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. It will be the second straight weekend USD faces a top-25 Pac-12 team on the road.

JOEY STEPPING UP
- Redshirt sophomore Joey Calcaterra has jumped out to be the Toreros' primary offensive threat this season as he is the team's leader in points (16.8) on 43.1% shooting from the field and 41.4% from beyond the arc.

- Calcaterra has reached double-digits in points in all five games this season. Last year in his redshirt freshman campaign, Calcaterra had 10+ points in a game twice.

- The product of Marin Catholic HS has scored 20+ points three times this year, including a career-high 21 in back-to-back games against Fresno State and Weber State on November 14 and 16.

- In the last three games, Calcaterra is averaging 17.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals. He is 17-of-35 (48.6%) from the field and 8-of-16 (50%) from three-point range.

- Calcaterra's 84 points are the most by a WCC player so far this season. His 16.8 points per game are fifth-best in the conference.

STEALING THE SHOW
- USD has 38 steals in five games this season (7.6/game), which are the second-most among WCC teams (42nd in the nation).

- The Toreros have eight or more steals in four of their five games, including in each of the last three. They had a season-high 10 at Weber State last Thursday followed by nine at #25 Colorado to help them average 9.0 in the last three contests.

- Redshirt freshman Marion Humphrey leads the team and the WCC with 10 steals while Joey Calcaterra is second and fifth with eight. Humphrey is third in the conference with 2.0 steals per game.

- Of the 10 Toreros to suit up this season, nine have at least one while eight have multiple.

NOEL NOEL
- After scoring no points in seven minutes of USD's overtime win against Fresno State, freshman Noel Coleman has heated up in the last two games, averaging 7.5 points in 20.5 minutes off the bench.

- The guard from Belgium scored a career-high 10 points in 18 minutes at #25 Colorado, going 4-of-5 from the field. He also had a personal-best two steals.

- Coleman is a 60% shooter (6-of-10) in the last two games, including 2-of-4 from three. 

- For the season, Coleman is 9-of-18 (50%) from the field and averaging 4.6 points in 15.4 minutes.

FINN'S RETURN
- Torrey Pines HS product Finn Sullivan made his season debut at #25 Colorado this past Saturday, scoring six points in 11 minutes off the bench. The sophomore guard was coming back off an offseason injury.

- Sullivan also had three rebounds and two steals while he was 2-of-5 (40%) from the field.

- Last season as a freshman, Sullivan played in 32 games and averaged 4.1 points in 16.4 minutes. He finished the season averaging 8.0 points (32 total) on 10-of-16 (62.5%) shooting and 5-of-7 (71.4%) from long range in the final four games.

- In last year's game against SDSU, Sullivan had nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 25 minutes off the bench in USD's win.

MACHINE À REBONDIR
- Navarro College (TX) transfer James Jean-Marie has joined the Torero starting lineup since the second game of the season and been USD's leading rebounder ever since. In the last four games, the Montreal, Canada product is averaging 10.0 boards per game (40 total).

- Jean-Marie's 42 rebounds on the season are the most in the WCC while his 8.4 per game are second-best.

- Jean-Marie has two double-digit rebound games this year: 12 at Long Beach State on November 9 and 11 vs. Fresno State on November 12. His 11 against the Bulldogs helped him record his first career double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds).

- Last season with Navarro College, Jean-Marie averaged 7.3 rebounds in 32 games during the 2018-19 season.

FROM DOWNTOWN
- The Toreros have put up 20+ three-point attempts in each of their five games this season. They had a season-high 26 attempts in their last game at #25 Colorado last Saturday.

- The 114 three-point attempts are second-most among WCC schools this season and 49th in the country.

- Last year, USD had 20+ three-point attempts in 25 of the 36 games.

- USD is averaging 7.2 three-pointers made (8th in the WCC) and 31.6% three-point shooting (9th) this season. 

- Of the 286 shots taken by USD this year, 40% are from three-point range. Last year, of the 2,002 field goal attempts, 40% were from three-point range (808).

TOUGH COMPETITION TO START
- San Diego State represents the fourth team in USD's first six games this season that had 20+ wins a year ago. The Toreros have also faced UC Irvine (31 wins), Fresno State (23) and Colorado (23).

- The Toreros will face a total of six teams in their first eight games that had 20-win campaigns in 2018-19 (Washington, Hofstra). USD also had 20+ wins last year.
