ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. – In his first tournament of the fall, junior
August Holmgren never dropped a set and earned the singles title at the Jack Cramer Collegiate Tournament held at the Jack Cramer Tennis Club on Saturday.
With a 6-2, 6-2 win over Raul Dobai of New Mexico in the semifinals, the No. 1 seed and the 57th-ranked Holmgren won the championship with a walkover over Sean Hill of BYU in the championship. It is the first singles championship by a Torero this fall.
"I am really proud of the way August competed in his first tournament back this fall," said USD head coach
Ryan Keckley. "His level was exceptional at times after missing two months of training due to injury. This weekend provided a lot of necessary confidence going into next weekend's event at USC. We are excited to get back on court during this short week and get better."
Holmgren finished the weekend 5-0 in singles.
In doubles, Holmgren and
Nico Borter lost 8-7 in Saturday's semifinal match against Jake Trondson and Raul Dobai of New Mexico. The pair went 2-1 in doubles during the tournament.
