SAN DIEGO – In a fitting send-off for the senior class,
Henry Lander scored the game-winner while
Miguel Berry scored twice to lift San Diego to a 4-2 comeback win over Portland on Saturday at Torero Stadium.
The Toreros (11-5-1, 2-4 WCC) snapped their four-game losing streak with the help of Lander's header on a corner kick delivered by senior
Freddy Polzer in the 80th minute to break a 2-2 tie. Berry, meanwhile, scored the first and last goal for the Toreros as they wrapped up the regular season with a 6-3-1 mark at home.
In their final game at Torero Stadium, all three seniors – Lander, Berry and Polzer – registered a point.
San Diego fell behind two goals early as Portland (9-6-1, 3-3 WCC) used a goal in the fifth minute by Luke Hendel and another in the 22nd minute by Esteban Calvo to establish the advantage.
Berry answered, though, when a free kick taken by
George West was headed in by the senior forward to cut the deficit in half. West's free kick was taken from about 25 yards out, and Berry directed it in from the middle of the penalty area.
Coming out of halftime, a cross sent in to
Alex Churness narrowly missed the forward's head but was deflected in for an own goal by the Pilots to tie it at 2-2 in the 62nd minute.
With consistent back-and-forth pressure, the Toreros eventually broke through with Lander's first goal of the season on the header in the 80th. Four minutes later, Berry beat a Portland defender one-on-one on the wing and shot a rocket past the Pilot goalkeeper for his second goal.
It was the fifth time this year Berry scored multiple goals in the game. He has a career-high 16 goals this season, which rank tied for the third-most ever by a Torero and most since 2000 when Ryan Coiner scored 17.
USD goalkeeper
Matt Wiher bounced back from the two goals in the first 22 minutes by making four saves, including three in the second half.
San Diego will conclude its regular season on the road when it travels to Santa Clara on November 16 for a 7 p.m. match.
