Toreros Aim for Third Straight Win

USD will face its fourth Big West opponent of the year in UC Davis

SAN DIEGO Winners in back-to-back games, San Diego returns home for a final matchup in the Jenny Craig Pavilion before Christmas as it hosts UC Davis on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Toreros, who have won by double-digits in each of their last two games, face off against their fourth and final Big West opponent of the season in the Aggies (4-7). USD is 1-2 against the conference so far, with both losses coming in the first two games of the season.

Saturday's game can be seen on the WCC Network, with the Voice of the Toreros Jack Cronin on the call.

LAST TIME OUT: USD DOMINATES GLASS IN 66-54 WIN OVER CAL STATE FULLERTON
- Braun Hartfield scored 18 to lead three Toreros in double-figures while San Diego out-rebounded Cal State Fullerton by 18 as the Toreros beat the Titans, 66-54, on Wednesday at Titan Gym. The Toreros (5-7) picked up their second win in a row behind Hartfield, who scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half, and a defense that not only out-rebounded the Titans (3-8) but also limited them to under 60 points and 35% shooting from the field (21-of-60). Joining Hartfield in double-figures was James Jean-Marie, who had a career-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting (2-of-3 3FG), and Marion Humphrey, who had 10 along with six rebounds and four assists. The three double-digit scorers were also among a group of five Toreros that had six or more rebounds. Alex Florescaled the team with 10 while Yauhen Massalski had eight.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST UC DAVIS
- Saturday will be the eighth all-time meeting between San Diego and UC Davis, with the Toreros holding the series lead, 6-1.

- The two schools faced off last season in Davis as the Toreros handled the Aggies, 76-57, behind 28 points by current-Stockton Kings forward Isaiah Pineiro. As a team, USD shot 50% from the field.

- San Diego has won three straight against the Aggies, with two of the wins occurring in the last four years. USD is 2-0 all-time against UC Davis at the Division I level.

- The first ever meeting between USD and UC Davis was in 1961-62 (W, 60-58).

LOOKING AHEAD
- Following a week off due to finals, USD will head to the Bay Area for a neutral site game against Stanford at the Chase Center in San Francisco as part of the Al Attles Classic. The game is the first of four that day in the Golden State Warriors' new arena.

AIMING FOR THREE IN A ROW
- USD has won back-to-back games for the second time this season with the last two victories coming against Holy Cross at home and Cal State Fullerton on the road.

- The last time the Toreros won consecutive games was Nov. 12 and 14 against Fresno State and Weber State.

- San Diego has not won three straight games since its run to the semifinals of the 2019 WCC Tournament last March. It has not put together a three-game winning streak in the regular season since December 1-9, 2018.

IN THE 50s
- San Diego has held each of its last two opponents to less than 60 points, making it the first time since March 2019 that it has limited the opposition to 59 points or less in consecutive games.

- USD has held three opponents to less than 60 points this year (other: 56 by Weber State on Nov. 14).

- Last year, the Toreros held 10 teams to 59 points or less and three in the first 12 games. They went 10-0 in such games.

DEFENSIVE EFFORT
- The Toreros are averaging 52.5 points per game against in the last two contests while opponents are shooting 36.4% (43-of-118). From three-point range, opponents are 10-of-35 (28.6%).

CLEANING THE GLASS
- As opponents have been cold from the field, the Toreros have handled the glass in the last three games by out-rebounding the opposition by a combined 125-102. 

- USD has out-rebounded the other side in each of the last three games, something it only did twice in the first nine games of the season. The Toreros are 2-1 in the last three contests (3-6 in the first nine).

- USD's +18 rebounding margin at Cal State Fullerton was its best in a game since November 15, 2018 when it out-rebounded San Diego Christian, 49-26.

- In the first nine games of the season, the Toreros were being out-rebounded by an average margin of -4.0 boards. In the last three, they have the advantage (+7.7).

OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION
- While the defense is holding opponents to 66.6 points on 41.3% shooting in the last five games, the USD offense is averaging more than 70 points (71.4) while shooting 44.7% from the field (136-of-304).

- In the last five games, USD has shot 41.9% or higher in each game. In the seven games before the recent stretch, USD only shot above 40% twice.

- In the first seven contests, USD shot 40.3% (158-of-392) and averaged 64.1 points. They are scoring seven more points per game over the last five.

BRAUN BRAUN
- Braun Hartfield led the Toreros in scoring for the fourth time this season when he had 18 points at Cal State Fullerton earlier this week. It was his fifth straight double-digit scoring game and eighth overall this season.

- The Cleveland, Ohio native is averaging 17.2 points on 49.3% shooting (34-of-69) in the last five games as he is one of two Toreros averaging double figures (Joey Calcaterra, 13.4).

- Hartfield is also averaging 7.6 rebounds per game over the five-game stretch along with 2.0 assists and 1.8 steals. He is first on the team in steals, second in rebounds and third in assists since November 27.

- He is also the team leader in average minutes over the last five games as he is the only one averaging more than 30 minutes (34.0).

- In the first seven games, Hartfield averaged 9.4 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 37.3%, meaning he has improved his scoring nearly eight points per game while improved his shooting 12 percentage points.

- Hartfield has become the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder for the season, averaging 12.7 points and 6.6 rebounds.

- He is the second Torero this season to have five consecutive games of 10+ points, joining Joey Calcaterra who turned in the feat in the first five contests of the year.

YAUHEN IS BACK
- Junior Yauhen Massalski, who missed nine games due to injury, has returned in a big way for the Toreros. The native of Belarus is averaging 7.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the last two games while shooting 50% from the field (7-of-14).

- Massalski is averaging 17.5 minutes per game in the last two and is coming off a 13-minute effort at Cal State Fullerton where he had two points and eight rebounds.

- The difference of Massalski on the floor has been stark as he has a +32 plus/minus in the last two games. USD is outscoring its opponents 62-30 when Massalski is in the game, compared to being outscored 72-75 when he is on the bench.

- In the last two games, the Toreros are outscoring their opponents in the paint 66-54 and holding them to 43.5% (27-of-62) on shots inside the key. They also hold the advantage in second-chance points, 45-18.

JAMES GETTING OFFENSIVE
- James Jean-Marie posted a new career-high in scoring on Wednesday at Cal State Fullerton, tallying 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting (55.6%).

- The junior forward made two three-pointers, which is the third time he has drained multiple threes in a game this season. For the year, Jean-Marie is 8-of-17 (47.1%) from beyond the arc.

- Jean-Marie showed his all-around presence against the Titans as it was his first game this year in which he had 10+ points, 5+ rebounds, and 2+ blocks. He finished Wednesday with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in 25 minutes.

CLOSING IN ON NO. 600
- San Diego is two wins away from registering its 600th win in Division I basketball. They enter Saturday's game against UC Davis with an all-time Division I record of 598-594. 

- The Toreros joined Division I with the 1979-80 season, making this season the 41st year of Division I basketball for USD.

- Last season, the Toreros recorded their 900th overall win in program history (Division I and II). The overall program win-loss record currently stands at 916-904.

WCC VS. BIG WEST
- USD has become familiar with the Big West Conference, as Saturday stands as the fourth game of the season against a school from the Big West. The Toreros are 1-2 against the conference so far. Last season, USD was 3-0 against the Big West.

- In the KenPom rankings, the West Coast Conference is ninth out of 32 conferences while the Big West is 22nd.
