Third Straight Win

Toreros hold UC Davis to one field goal in the last seven minutes

SAN DIEGO – San Diego held UC Davis to one field goal in the final seven minutes and went on a 12-2 run late in the second half to pull ahead to a 58-54 win over the Aggies on Saturday at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (6-7) earned their third win in a row, their best streak of the season, by holding the Aggies (4-8) to 31% from the field and 21% from three-point range. With UC Davis limited offensively, USD made five of its last eight shots to help capture its fourth victory at home.

Joey Calcaterra kept the Aggies away in the final minute by making 5-of-6 free throws. The redshirt sophomore finished for the team lead with 11 points, helped by going 7-of-8 at the charity stripe for the entire game.

For the fourth consecutive contest, the Toreros outrebounded the opposition, 36-29, and outscored them in the paint, 32-18. Guard Marion Humphrey led the team in rebounds with a career-high 12 while every Torero that played had at least one board.

USD was only 4-of-22 (18.2%) from three-point range but 18-of-32 (56.3%) on two-point shots. The Aggies, meanwhile, were 4-of-19 (21.1%) from three and 14-of-39 (35.9%) from inside the arc.

The 31% shooting percentage was the lowest allowed by USD all season.

Braun Hartfield tied Calcaterra for the USD lead in scoring with 11 points. The redshirt junior, who was 5-of-9 shooting, also had six rebounds and four assists.

Finn Sullivan joined his teammates in double-figures in scoring by matching his season-high in points with 10 off the bench. The sophomore added three rebounds, an assist and a block.

Neither side was able to find an offensive rhythm in the first half as the two combined to go 19-of-62 (30.6%) from the field and 3-of-18 from three-point range.

USD was on the right end of the slow offensive start by UC Davis as it held the Aggies to only one shot on their first 17 attempts. However, the Toreros could not pull away and trailed going into the break, 25-21. Jared Rodriguez was the only the Torero with more than one field goal as the redshirt sophomore scored seven points in the first 20 minutes.

The Toreros trailed by as much as six in the second half and were down 38-33 with 10:56 remaining, but a quick 6-0 run over a minute-and-a-half stretch, keyed by a layup and two free throws by Calcaterra, gave them the lead, 39-38, with 9:38 left.

USD made it 41-38 with a layup by Hartfield following a steal by Humphrey, but a layup by Joe Mooney and three by Stefan Gonzalez off a handoff by Mooney gave the lead back to UC Davis at 43-41 at the 7:56 mark. However, the three by Gonzalez was one of only two field goals made by the Aggies in the last eight minutes.

While UC Davis struggled shooting, back-to-back three-pointers by Sullivan and Hartfield returned the advantage to the Toreros at 47-43 with 6:38 left. Sullivan drained his three-pointer to beat the shot clock around the seven-and-a-half minute mark, and on the following possession, Hartfield took a deep three from near the top of the key to make it 47-43 with just over six minutes remaining.

Humphrey also helped the Toreros put the game away with his first field goals made in the game with under four minutes left. The second of his consecutive successful shots gave the Toreros their largest lead of the night, 53-45, with 2:37 left.

With a week off due to finals, the Toreros will return to action on Saturday, December 21 with a neutral site matchup against Stanford in the Chase Center in San Francisco. Tipoff against the Cardinal, the Toreros' third Pac-12 opponent of the season, is set for noon.
