SAN FRANCISCO – San Diego forced a season-high 20 turnovers, had three players score in double-figures, and nearly cleared a double-digit deficit in the final minute-and-a-half, but Stanford held off the Toreros, 62-59, in the Al Attles Classic at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
The Toreros scored 15 of the game's final 21 points, including six by
Braun Hartfield and five from
James Jean-Marie, to close what was at one point a 12-point deficit. USD caused two turnovers and held the Cardinal (11-1) to just one field goal in the final four minutes.
Joey Calcaterra, playing near his hometown of Novato, Calif., led the team in scoring with 17 points.
Marion Humphrey fell one point short of his season with 16 points on 54.5% shooting (6-of-11).
Hartfield scored nearly half of his points in the final minute-and-a-half to finish with 13. He also had nine rebounds, tying
Yauhen Massalski for the team-lead.
The Toreros were within one with nine minutes left thanks to three straight baskets that powered a 9-2 run. USD also held Stanford without a field goal and forced five turnovers during the four-minute stretch to help make it a 45-44 game.
Stanford jumped out to a double-digit lead, though, when a pull-up jumper by Daejon Davis at the 8:34 mark fueled an 11-0 run that made the score 56-44 with just over four minutes left. After only scoring on two free throws midway through the second half, the Cardinal made four of their next six baskets and forced USD into four turnovers to take the 12-point lead.
With the help of holding Stanford to only one field goal, the Toreros chipped away at the deficit behind the half-dozen points by Hartfield. The redshirt junior scored four points in the final three seconds after scoring on the rebound of his missed third free throw in the waning time. Jean-Marie ignited the stretch with a three-pointer at the 3:09 mark.
The Toreros led for most of the first half behind eight forced turnovers in the first 16 minutes and holding the Cardinal to less than 40% shooting (9-of-23). USD, which led by as much as nine in the opening 20 minutes, were up 29-24 after a three-pointer by Calcaterra with 4:44 left.
The Cardinal entered the break with a two-point lead, however, thanks to a 7-0 run to close out the half.
On their first 12 field goals, the Torero offense had nine assists. Humphrey, meanwhile, started 4-of-6 from the field while Calcaterra was good on his first two three-pointers.
The Toreros now enter a seven-day break for the holidays before hosting Whittier College on Sunday, December 29 at 2 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Alex Floresca had five rebounds, three steals, three assists and a block in 32 minutes.
Hartfield had four assists to two turnovers to go with his 13 points and nine rebounds in 37 minutes.

The loss snapped USD's three-game winning streak.
