SAN DIEGO -- San Diego (6-5) grabbed an 18-16 first-quarter lead and never trailed from there on the way to a 59-40 victory over CSUN (3-9) at home on Saturday afternoon to close out nonconference play.

"They've been working really, really hard," said head coach
Cindy Fisher. "Everything we asked them to do today they did, and they just worked hard and had fun doing it."

The Toreros had two players score in double figures, led by
Madison Pollock, who had 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Sydney Hunter tacked on 10 points and eight rebounds, while
Jordyn Edwards added nine points, six assists and two steals.

San Diego was potent off the glass, out rebounding the Matadors 34-17 in the contest led by Hunter's eight boards.

The San Diego defense was efficient on Saturday forcing 20 turnovers and converting them into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Edwards' two steals led the way individually for the Toreros.

The contest marked the lowest amount of points the Toreros have allowed against a Division I opponent this season.

"Our defense creates offense," said Fisher. "When they are locked in and giving it everything they have, it gives everybody a lot of intensity."

The first quarter lead was built predominately in the paint as seniors
Patricia Brossmann and Pollock fought hard down low to create opportunities. San Diego scored 10 of its 18 points close to the basket in the period.

San Diego entered the second with a two-point advantage as the defense worked to shut down the Matadors.
Aminata Dosso came up with a massive block in the final seconds of the quarter to hold the Matadors to only four points in the period.

The Toreros' offense gained momentum, widening their lead as they entered halftime with a 34-20 edge. San Diego forced six CSUN turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.

San Diego continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Pollock, to expand its lead further to 47-24 with under two minutes to go in the third.

Myah Pace found offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter scoring six of the Toreros 12 points in the quarter. USD then held on for the victory in the fourth. San Diego took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday, December 28 as they open up WCC play on the road against Pepperdine at 2 p.m. (PT).
