USD Aims for 600th Division I Win

Toreros end nonconference slate with matchup against Whittier

SAN DIEGO Winners in three of its last four games, San Diego returns home for its final nonconference matchup as it will host Whittier College on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros, who are outscoring their opponents by an average of 7.5 points in the last four games, will look to end their home nonconference schedule a win. So far, USD is 4-2 at home this season, but it has won three straight in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Sunday's game can be watched on the WCC Network, with the Voice of the Toreros Jack Cronin on the call.

LAST TIME OUT: USD FALLS TO STANFORD AT CHASE CENTER
- San Diego forced a season-high 20 turnovers, had three players score in double-figures, and nearly cleared a double-digit deficit in the final minute-and-a-half, but Stanford held off the Toreros, 62-59, in the Al Attles Classic at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The Toreros scored 15 of the game's final 21 points, including six by Braun Hartfield and five from James Jean-Marie, to close what was at one point a 12-point deficit. USD caused two turnovers and held the Cardinal (11-1) to just one field goal in the final four minutes. Joey Calcaterra, playing near his hometown of Novato, Calif., led the team in scoring with 17 points. Marion Humphrey fell one point short of his season with 16 points on 54.5% shooting (6-of-11). Hartfield scored nearly half of his points in the final minute-and-a-half to finish with 13. He also had nine rebounds, tying Yauhen Massalski for the team-lead.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST WHITTIER
- Saturday will be the 25th all-time meeting between USD and Whittier. However, it will be the first meeting when USD is a Division I team, a transition it made in 1979-80.

- The two schools last met in 1975-76, when USD lost to Whittier, 88-75. 

- The Toreros trail in the all-time series, 5-19, and have lost four straight.

- The Toreros and Whittier played each other 24 times from 1956 and 1976. They did not get their first win in the series until the 11th meeting, which took place in 1963-64.

LOOKING AHEAD
- With the nonconference season complete, the Toreros start an 16-game West Coast Conference schedule with a Thursday, January 2 matchup at LMU.

CLOSING IN ON NO. 600
- San Diego is one win away from registering its 600th win in Division I basketball. They enter Sunday's game against Whittier with an all-time Division I record of 599-595. 

- The Toreros joined Division I with the 1979-80 season, making this season the 41st year of Division I basketball for USD.

- Last season, the Toreros recorded their 900th overall win in program history (Division I and II). The overall program win-loss record currently stands at 917-905.

UNDER 60
- USD has held opponents to less than 60 points four times this season, going 4-0 in such contests.

- Last year, the Toreros held 10 opponents to 59 points or less and posted a 10-0 record in those games. They have won 15 consecutive games, dating back to 2017-18, when holding teams to less than 60 points.

- The Toreros are 14-0 under head coach Sam Scholl when they hold teams to 59 points or less (29-24 overall in his two-plus seasons as the head coach).

- The Toreros have four games of holding opponents to less than 60 points in their first 14 games of the season. In 2018-19, they had three such games in the first 14 contests.

CLEANING THE GLASS
- Complementing the Toreros' defensive effort on shots lately is their improved ability to rebound. During their recent four-game stretch, USD is outrebounding its opponents, on average, 39.8-33.5. Overall, it is outrebounding opponents 159-134.

- USD has outrebounded the other side in four of the last five games, something it only did twice in the first nine games of the season. The Toreros are 4-2 in games in which they win the rebounding battle.

- In the last three games, USD has a combined rebounding margin of +24. USD's +18 rebounding margin at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 11 was its best in a game since November 15, 2018 when it outrebounded San Diego Christian, 49-26.

- In the first nine games of the season, the Toreros were being outrebounded by an average margin of -4.0 boards. In the last five, they have the advantage (+5.8).

ABOUT THE TURNOVERS
- USD is coming off a game against Stanford in which it forced a season-high 20 turnovers. It bested its previous high of 19 set against Holy Cross on December 7.

- It was the most turnovers forced by the Toreros since December 2, 2015 when they forced Bethesda into 23 turnovers in a 71-53 win.

- It was the first time USD forced a Division I team into 20+ turnovers since November 16, 2012 (vs. Tulsa; L, 51-63).

- Since 2010-11, USD has forced an opponent into 20+ turnovers six times, five of which were against a Division I team. In those five games, USD is winless.

- USD forces an average of 13.5 turnovers per game, but in the last four, it has an average of 14.5.

JOEY BUCKETS
- Joey Calcaterra led the Toreros with 17 points against Stanford. It was his sixth game of 17+ points this season, four of which are 20+ point efforts.

- Last year as a redshirt freshman, Calcaterra only had 10+ points twice and never scored more than 13 in 32 games.

- Calcaterra leads the team in scoring this season by averaging 13.8 points.

BRAUN BRAUN
- Braun Hartfield has become the go-to offensive threat for the Toreros as the Cleveland, Ohio native is averaging 15.7 points on 47.3% shooting (44-of-93) in the last seven games. He has scored in double-digits in seven straight.

- He is the team's leading scorer in six of the last seven games and leading shooter among guards.

- In addition to averaging 15.7 points, Hartfield is averaging 7.6 rebounds (53 total) in the last seven - which is also tops on the team.

- In the first seven games, Hartfield averaged 9.4 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 37.3%, meaning he has improved his scoring just over six points per game while improved his shooting 10 percentage points.

- Hartfield is the first Torero this season to have 10+ points in seven straight games.

YAUHEN IS BACK
- Junior Yauhen Massalski, who missed nine games due to injury, has returned in a big way for the Toreros. The native of Belarus is averaging 6.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in the last four games (three off the bench, one as a starter).

- The difference of Massalski on the floor has been stark as he has a +30 plus/minus in the last four games. USD is outscoring its opponents 138-108 when Massalski is in the game, compared to being tied 113-113 when he is on the bench.

- In the last four games, the Toreros are outscoring their opponents in the paint 124-100 and holding them to 40.7% (50-of-123) on shots inside the key.
