NCAA Tournament Begins Against No. 23 Washington State

San Diego will travel to Hawai’i to compete in the first round

 SAN DIEGO—No. 20 San Diego will travel to Honolulu this week to take on No. 23 Washington State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m. PT in the Stan Sheriff Center at Hawai'i.
 
The Toreros (24-5) will make their tenth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, 18th in the past 19 years and 22nd in the past 24 years. The winner of the match between USD and the Cougars (23-9) will face the winner of Friday's second first-round match between No. 13 Hawai'i and Northern Colorado on Saturday at 9 p.m. PT.

TOREROS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
• It will be USD's 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance all-time and tenth consecutive. The Toreros hold a tournament record of 17-22 and have advanced to the second round in three of the past four years.
 
• San Diego's best tournament finish is the Sweet 16, which it has accomplished four times including last season (2004, 2006, 2013, 2018).
 
LAST TIME OUT
• San Diego took down Loyola Marymount, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 to conclude the regular season and claim the outright WCC Championship.
 
 • Four Toreros reached double-digit kills, including Katie Lukes and Grace Frohling who led the team with 12 kills. Lauren Turner and Thana Fayad added 10 kills apiece and Megan Jacobsen chipped in nine.
 
• Fayad recorded her ninth double-double of the season, finishing second on the team with 15 digs. Annie Benbow led the defense in the back court with 17 digs, while Anna Newsome and Camryn Tastad added nine each.
 
• USD's defense held LMU to a .143 hitting percentage and Turner continued to be a force at the net, registering a team-high six blocks including three solo stops.
 
• Newsome collected 47 assists in the match, directing the offense to a .296 hitting percentage.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST WASHINGTON STATE
• The Toreros trail the all-time series with the Cougars, 0-3. The last meeting between the two programs was Sept. 19, 2008 in Pullman, Wash.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
• San Diego remains at No. 20 in the AVCA Division I Coaches Poll this week. It is San Diego's highest-ranking this season and the fourth consecutive week the Toreros have appeared in the top-25.
 
• The Toreros sit at No. 26 in the NCAA Division I RPI rankings, having faced two opponents in the top-10 and five opponents in the top-30 (8-Nebraska, 9-Washington, 11-Hawaii, 17-BYU, 28-Southern California).
 
EIGHT TOREROS EARN WCC HONORS
• Three Toreros earned WCC major awards including Anna Newsome (Setter of the Year), Grace Frohling (Freshman of the Year), and Jennifer Petrie (Coach of the Year). It marks the sixth WCC Coach of the Year nod for Petrie.
 
 • Four Toreros were named All-WCC first team—the most since 2004—including Newsome, Frohling, Thana Fayad and Megan Jacobsen. Katie Lukes earned All-WCC second team honors, while Annie Benbow and Lauren Turner earned All-WCC honorable mention recognition. Frohling and Turner also earned spots on the All-WCC Freshman Team.
 
OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY
• The Toreros are currently hitting .286 as a team on the season to rank 7th in the nation and first in the WCC. USD is collecting 14.07 kills per set to rank 21st nationally and first in the conference.
 
• USD also ranks first in the WCC for assists per set (13.04) and 23rd nationally.
 
• Megan Jacobsen ranks first in the WCC and 8th nationally with a .411 hitting percentage.
 
BALANCED ATTACK
• When it comes to offense, San Diego likes to spread the ball around. Five different Toreros have led a match in kills this season for USD. Fayad leads the group with 12 matches and Jacobsen is right behind her with 10.
 
TOREROS EARN 11TH WCC TITLE
• San Diego claimed the 2019 West Coast Conference Championship with a 17-1 conference record. It marks the 11th WCC title in program history and fifth this decade. USD now ties Pepperdine for most conference titles in the WCC.
