Toreros Fall in NCAA Second Round

No. 20 San Diego falls to No. 18 Hawaii in NCAA Second Round

HONOLULU—No. 20 San Diego's postseason run came to a close on Saturday evening as the Toreros fell to No. 18 Hawaii, 3-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Toreros (25-6) took three tightly-contests sets down to the wire, 23-25, 21-25, 21-25, but were unable to push past the Rainbow Wahine (26-3) in front of a crowd of over 8,000 fans in the Stan Sheriff Center.

Grace Frohling and Katie Lukes led USD with 10 kills apiece and Megan Jacobsen added eight kills, hitting at a team-high .389 clip.

Anna Newsome collected 35 assists and added 10 digs to record her ninth double-double of the season. Roxie Wiblin also registered 10 digs, while Annie Benbow paced the team with 11 digs.

Defensively, the Toreros struggled at the net, collecting three team blocks to UH's nine. Frohling led the team with two blocks (one solo) and Jacobsen, Fayad and Turner all registered one block assist each.

Newsome and Camryn Tastad registered the two service aces for USD.

The Toreros had difficulty slowing the one-two punch of Hawaii's Hanna Helvig and Mckenna Ross, who collected 12 and 10 kills respectively while the Bows finished with a .277 hitting percentage. Skyler Williams and Hellvig led the defensive effort for UH with four block apiece.

UH came out red-hot to start the match, collecting five of its nine team blocks and hitting .375 as a team. With the teams knotted early 4-4, the Bows used an 8-2 run to take a commanding lead. USD battled back, fighting off three set points before eventually dropping the first frame, 23-25. Lukes paced Toreros early, collecting six of her 10 kills in the first set and hitting .857.

After trailing by as many as four points, the Toreros battled back to even the second set at 16-all behind the strong play of Jacobsen and Frohling. However, with the momentum and the crowd on its side, UH pulled away again on a 4-0 run and never looked back, taking a two-set lead into the break.

The third set saw a back and forth battle with eight ties and five lead changes with Jacobsen and Frohling again leading the way for USD with three kills each. At 14-all the Bows broke away with a 5-2 run to take the lead for the last time. The Toreros continued to battle down the stretch but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

With the loss, the Toreros conclude a remarkable season that saw their first outright WCC Championship since 2013 and their 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

The defeat also concludes the careers of USD seniors, Newsome, Jacobsen, Payton Douglass and Megan Priest. The 2019 senior class helped the Toreros to two WCC titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the second round and one to the Sweet 16.

The group closes out their careers with a record of 92-30.

The future remains bright for USD which expects to return 10 letterwinners next season.
